It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) that when death approached Abu Talib, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) came to him, and with him were Abdullah bin Abi Umayyah and Abu Jahl bin Hisham. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said to him: "O uncle, your right over me is the greatest, and you have done me great kindness; your right over me is even greater than that of my father. So say a word by which my intercession for you will become due on the Day of Resurrection. Say: 'La ilaha illallah' (There is no god but Allah)." The two of them said: "Will you turn away from the religion of Abd al-Muttalib?" So he fell silent. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) repeated his words, and he said: "I am upon the religion of Abd al-Muttalib", and he died in that state. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "I will keep seeking forgiveness for you as long as I am not forbidden concerning you." So Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, revealed this verse: "It is not for the Prophet and those who believe to ask forgiveness for the polytheists" to its end, and "And Ibrahim's asking forgiveness for his father" to the end of the verse [Surah al-Tawbah: 113 - 114].
This hadith is sahih in its chain, and the two Shaykhs did not record it, because Yunus and Uqayl narrated it from al-Zuhri, from Sa'id, as mursal.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: The hadith is sahih, but as the hadith of Sa'id bin al-Musayyab from his father al-Musayyab bin Hazn (may Allah be pleased with him). This is how the trustworthy students of al-Zuhri narrated it from him. Technical note / Defect ('illah): Sufyan bin Husayn contradicted them; he is thiqah (trustworthy) except in al-Zuhri, where he is weak. We have not found this narration of his with anyone other than the author (al-Hakim). Reference / Source: As for the hadith of Sa'id bin al-Musayyab from his father, it was recorded by Ahmad (39/ 23674), al-Bukhari (1360, 3884 and 4772), Muslim (24), al-Nasa'i (2173) and Ibn Hibban (982) by several routes from al-Zuhri, from Sa'id, from his father al-Musayyab bin Hazn. Reference / Source: As for the hadith of Abu Hurayrah about the death of Abu Talib, it is what Abu Hazim al-Ashja'i narrated from him: that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said to his uncle at the time of death: "Say: La ilaha illa Allah, and I will testify for you by it on the Day of Resurrection." He said: "Were it not that Quraysh would taunt me, saying that only fear of death (jaza') drove him to it, I would have delighted your eye with it." So Allah revealed: ﴿إِنَّكَ لَا تَهْدِي مَنْ أَحْبَبْتَ وَلَكِنَّ اللَّهَ يَهْدِي مَنْ يَشَاءُ﴾ [al-Qasas: 56] (Indeed, you do not guide whom you love, but Allah guides whom He wills). Ahmad (15/ 9610), Muslim (25) and others recorded it.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): This is what the author (may Allah have mercy on him) said! But as for Yunus (Ibn Yazid), we have found his narration from al-Zuhri only as musnad (connected), from the hadith of Sa'id bin al-Musayyab from his father, and it is in Muslim (24) (39) and Ibn Hibban (982). As for the narration of Uqayl (Ibn Khalid), we have not found it in the sources available to us, either musnad or mursal.
