Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 3329

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) that when Abu Talib died, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O uncle, may Allah have mercy on you and forgive you. I will keep seeking forgiveness for you until Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, forbids me." So the Muslims too began seeking forgiveness for their deceased polytheist relatives, and Allah Almighty revealed this verse: "It is not for the Prophet and those who believe to ask forgiveness for the polytheists, even if they are relatives, after it has become clear to them that they are the people of Hellfire" [Surah al-Tawbah: 113].
This hadith is sahih in its chain, and the two Shaykhs did not record it. After it, Abu Ali (may Allah have mercy on him) told us: "I do not know anyone other than Abu Humah al-Yamani who narrated this hadith from Sufyan with a connected chain, and he is trustworthy (thiqah), whereas the other students of Ibn Uyaynah narrated it from him as mursal."

Hadith Grading
Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Note / Clarification: In the manuscripts this name was corrupted into "al-Fadl". See his biography in "Siyar A'lam al-Nubala'" (14/ 257-258).

Grading: Its isnad is good (jayyid) if Abu Hummah (Muhammad bin Yusuf al-Zabidi al-Yamani) preserved it from Sufyan as connected (mawsul).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): For when Ibn Hibban mentioned this Abu Hummah in "al-Thiqat" (9/ 104), he said: He sometimes erred and narrated unusual reports. We say: He was contradicted by Muhammad bin Umar al-Waqidi (Ibn Sa'd, "al-Tabaqat" 1/ 102, and by way of him Ibn Asakir, "Tarikh Dimashq" 66/ 336) and by Abd al-Wahhab bin Abd al-Rahim al-Ashja'i (also Ibn Asakir, 66/ 337); the two of them narrated it from Sufyan, from Amr bin Dinar, as mursal, without mentioning Jabir. But al-Waqidi is matruk (abandoned) according to the majority of the hadith scholars, and no declaration of Abd al-Wahhab al-Ashja'i as trustworthy is transmitted from anyone other than Ibn Hibban.
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: It is supported by the hadith of Sa'id bin al-Musayyab from his father al-Musayyab bin Hazn, in Ahmad (39/ 23674), al-Bukhari (3884), Muslim (24) and others. See also the next hadith.

Technical note / Defect ('illah): We have found only the narration of two people from Sufyan as mursal, as mentioned above, and those two routes are not strong.
