It is narrated from Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) that when the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) returned from the Battle of Uhud, he (peace and blessings be upon him) heard the women of the Ansar weeping, so he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "But Hamzah (may Allah be pleased with him) has no one to weep for him." When this reached the women of the Ansar, they began to weep for Sayyiduna Hamzah. Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) slept, and when he woke up they were still weeping. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Woe to them! They have been weeping the whole day today. Let them weep (now), but after today let them not weep (in this way) over anyone who dies."
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of Imam Muslim, but they did not record it. It is the most famous hadith in Madinah, for to this day the women of Madinah mention Sayyiduna Hamzah (may Allah be pleased with him) and lament him before they lament their own dead. The two Shaykhs agreed on recording the narration of Ayyub al-Sakhtiyani from Abdullah bin Abi Mulaykah, in which a debate took place between Abdullah bin Umar and Abdullah bin Abbas concerning weeping over the deceased; then they both referred the matter to the Mother of the Believers Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her), and she said: By Allah! The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) did not say, "The deceased is punished because of anyone's weeping"; rather, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Indeed, the punishment of the disbeliever is increased because of his family's weeping over him." And indeed it is Allah who makes one laugh and makes one weep, and "No bearer of burdens shall bear the burden of another." [Surah al-An'am: 164]

Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) states that (after the passing of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)) Sayyidah Fatimah (may Allah be pleased with her) said: "O Anas! Did your hearts allow you to throw dust upon the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)?!" The narrator says that Fatimah (may Allah be pleased with her) also said (in her grief and sorrow): "O my dear father, who answered the call of his Lord! O my dear father, how near he has become to his Lord! O my dear father, whose abode is the Garden of Firdaws! O my dear father, to Jibril I announce his death." Sa'id bin Mansur added in his narration from Abu Usamah that he said: I heard Hammad bin Zayd say: I saw Thabit al-Bunani, when he was narrating this hadith to us, weep so much that his ribs seemed to be heaving (from his sobs).
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of the two Shaykhs, but they did not record it!

Hakim bin Qays bin Asim narrates from his father that at the time of his death he made a bequest, saying: "When I die, do not wail over me, for no wailing was done over the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) either."
This chain is sahih (authentic), but the two Shaykhs did not record it. Qays bin Asim al-Minqari was the chief of Banu Tamim, and among the musnad narrations reported from him from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) there is nothing besides this statement. He had his bequest written down: "Do not wail over me, for I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) forbid wailing." A supporting narration (shahid) for this hadith is the narration of al-Hasan al-Basri in which the lengthy bequest of Qays bin Asim is mentioned, and there is also a supporting hadith narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him):

Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) states that when Ibrahim, the son of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), passed away, Sayyiduna Usamah bin Zayd (may Allah be pleased with him) cried out. At this the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "This (crying out) is not from me, and the one who cries out (in lament) has no right. The heart grieves and the eye sheds tears, but we do not say anything (with the tongue) that angers our Lord."

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: "When I die, do not wail over me, for no wailing was done over the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) either."
This addition narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah is extremely gharib (singular), and Uthman al-Ghatafani does not meet the conditions of this book of ours.

Hadith Grading
Hadith Takhrij «
Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abi Awfa (may Allah be pleased with him) states that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) used to forbid elegies (poems of wailing and lamentation in memory of the dead).
Ibrahim bin Muslim al-Hajari is not an abandoned (matruk) narrator, although the two Shaykhs did not use him as evidence. This hadith is a supporting narration (shahid) for the preceding narrations, and it is gharib sahih, since Imam Muslim used Sharik bin Abdullah as evidence.

It is narrated from Abu Malik al-Ash'ari (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "In my Ummah there are four things from the practices of the Jahiliyyah (pre-Islamic ignorance) which they will not abandon: boasting about ancestry and lineage, slandering the lineage of others, seeking rain from the stars, and wailing over the dead. And the wailing woman, if she does not repent before her death, will stand on the Day of Resurrection wearing a garment of sulphur, and over it she will be clothed in a shirt made of flames of the Fire."
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of the two Shaykhs. Imam Muslim recorded the abridged narration of Aban bin Yazid from Yahya bin Abi Kathir, but the two Shaykhs did not record it with the additions found in the hadith of Ali bin al-Mubarak, even though it meets the condition of both of them.
