It is narrated from Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) that when the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) returned from the Battle of Uhud, he (peace and blessings be upon him) heard the women of the Ansar weeping, so he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "But Hamzah (may Allah be pleased with him) has no one to weep for him." When this reached the women of the Ansar, they began to weep for Sayyiduna Hamzah. Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) slept, and when he woke up they were still weeping. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Woe to them! They have been weeping the whole day today. Let them weep (now), but after today let them not weep (in this way) over anyone who dies."
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of Imam Muslim, but they did not record it. It is the most famous hadith in Madinah, for to this day the women of Madinah mention Sayyiduna Hamzah (may Allah be pleased with him) and lament him before they lament their own dead. The two Shaykhs agreed on recording the narration of Ayyub al-Sakhtiyani from Abdullah bin Abi Mulaykah, in which a debate took place between Abdullah bin Umar and Abdullah bin Abbas concerning weeping over the deceased; then they both referred the matter to the Mother of the Believers Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her), and she said: By Allah! The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) did not say, "The deceased is punished because of anyone's weeping"; rather, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Indeed, the punishment of the disbeliever is increased because of his family's weeping over him." And indeed it is Allah who makes one laugh and makes one weep, and "No bearer of burdens shall bear the burden of another." [Surah al-An'am: 164]
