Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) that he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Indeed, the deceased hears the sound of their sandals as they turn their backs and go away. Then if he was a believer, the prayer is at his head, fasting is on his right, zakah is on his left, and good deeds such as charity, prayer, maintaining ties of kinship, kindness and good treatment of people are at his feet. When (the angels) come from the side of his head, the prayer says: 'There is no way of entry from my side.' Then they come from his right side, and fasting says: 'There is no way of entry from my side.' Then they come from his left side, and zakah says: 'There is no way of entry from my side.' Then they come from the side of his feet, and the good deeds say: 'There is no way of entry from my side.' Then it is said to him: 'Sit up,' and he sits up, and the sun is made to appear before him as though it is close to setting. It is said to him: 'What do you say about this man (Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him)) who was among you, and what do you testify about him?' He says: 'Let me pray.' They say: 'You will soon do so, but tell us about what we are asking you.' He asks: 'What are you asking me about?' They say: 'Tell us about what we are asking you.' He says: 'Let me pray.' They say: 'You will soon do so, but tell us about what we are asking you.' He asks: 'What are you asking me about?' They say: 'Tell us about this man who was among you: what do you say about him, and what do you testify about him?' He says: 'Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him)? I testify that he is the servant of Allah and that he brought the truth from Allah.' It is said to him: 'Upon this you lived, upon this you died, and upon this you will be resurrected, if Allah wills.' Then a door is opened for him towards Hell, and it is said to him: 'Look at this abode of yours, and at what Allah had prepared for you had you disobeyed,' and his joy and delight increase. Then a door is opened for him towards Paradise, and it is said to him: 'Look at your (real) abode and at what Allah has prepared for you,' and his joy and delight increase further. And this is the meaning of the saying of Allah, the Mighty and Majestic: 'Allah keeps firm those who believe with the firm word in the life of this world and in the Hereafter, and Allah sends the wrongdoers astray, and Allah does what He wills' [Ibrahim: 27]." The narrator said: Abu al-Hakam, narrating from Abu Hurayrah, also mentioned that it is said to him: "Sleep as the bride sleeps, whom none wakes except the one of her family who is dearest to her." Then, returning to the narration of Abu Salamah from Abu Hurayrah, he said: "And if he was a disbeliever, he is approached from the side of his head, but nothing is found there; then from his right, his left and the side of his feet, but nothing is found there. It is said to him: 'Sit up,' and he sits up fearful and terrified. He is asked: 'What do you say about this man who was among you, and what do you testify about him?' He says: 'Which man?' They say: 'The man who was among you.' But he cannot recall him. Then they say: 'Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him).' He says: 'I heard the people saying something, so I said as they said.' It is said to him: 'Upon this you lived, upon this you died, and upon this you will be resurrected, if Allah wills.' Then a door is opened for him towards Paradise, and it is said to him: 'Look at your abode, and at what Allah had prepared for you had you obeyed Him,' and his regret and ruin increase. Then his grave is made so narrow for him that his ribs interlock. And this is the meaning of the saying of Allah, the Mighty and Majestic: 'Then indeed, for him is a straitened life, and We will raise him on the Day of Resurrection blind' [Ta Ha: 124]."
