Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 1429

It is narrated from Abu Malik al-Ash'ari (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "In my Ummah there are four things from the practices of the Jahiliyyah (pre-Islamic ignorance) which they will not abandon: boasting about ancestry and lineage, slandering the lineage of others, seeking rain from the stars, and wailing over the dead. And the wailing woman, if she does not repent before her death, will stand on the Day of Resurrection wearing a garment of sulphur, and over it she will be clothed in a shirt made of flames of the Fire."
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of the two Shaykhs. Imam Muslim recorded the abridged narration of Aban bin Yazid from Yahya bin Abi Kathir, but the two Shaykhs did not record it with the additions found in the hadith of Ali bin al-Mubarak, even though it meets the condition of both of them.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Technical note: (2) In the manuscripts "arba'" is written without the alif, which accords with the dialect of the tribes of Rabi'ah and Ghanm, whereas in eloquent usage it should be "arba'an" because it is the subject (ism) of "inna". We have restored it according to the eloquent usage.

Grading: (3) This hadith is sahih; the chain is hasan because of Muhammad bin Sinan al-Qazzaz, and he has been corroborated (mutaba'ah). Abu Sallam is Mamtur al-Habashi.
Reference / Source: Ahmad (37/22904) narrated it via the chain of Abu 'Amir al-'Aqadi.
Reference / Source: Ahmad, Muslim (934) and Ibn Hibban narrated it via the chain of Aban bin Yazid al-'Attar.
Grading: Ma'mar differed here and mentioned Ibn Mu'aniq as an intermediary, who is "majhul" (unknown); therefore, according to Imam al-Daraqutni, the narration of Abu Sallam is the correct one.
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: On this topic there is the narration of Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them) in al-Bukhari (3850).
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: The narration of Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) is in Musnad Ahmad (12/7560).
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: For the narrations of further Companions, see "Majma' al-Zawa'id" (3/12-13).

(Note / Clarification): "Al-sarabil" means a shirt or tunic.

Technical note: (1) In the manuscripts it had become "Zayd"; the correct form is "Aban bin Yazid al-'Attar".

Technical note / Defect ('illah): (2) This hadith is in Sahih Muslim just as in al-Hakim, but there it mentions "a garment of mange" instead of "a garment of the flame of the Fire".
