Sayyiduna Itban bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates to Mahmud bin al-Rabi' (may Allah be pleased with him): Something afflicted my eyesight, so I sent word to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) that I would like you (peace and blessings be upon him) to come to my house and pray there, so that I may take it as a place of prayer. So the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) came to me, along with those of his (peace and blessings be upon him) Companions whom Allah willed. He (peace and blessings be upon him) entered my house and began to pray, while his (peace and blessings be upon him) Companions began talking among themselves and mentioning the hypocrites. Then they attributed the gravest part of the matter to Malik bin al-Dukhshum; they wished that he (peace and blessings be upon him) would supplicate against him so that he would perish, they wished that some harm would befall him. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) completed the prayer and said: "Does he not testify that there is no true god but Allah and that I am the Messenger of Allah?" The people said: He says that with his tongue, but it is not in his heart. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "No one who testifies that there is no true god but Allah and that I am the Messenger of Allah will enter the Fire, nor will the Fire consume him."

Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: When the eyesight of Sayyiduna Itban bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) was afflicted, he sent word to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him): I would like you (peace and blessings be upon him) to come to me and pray in my house, and supplicate for blessing for us. So the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) set out with some of his Companions and went to his house. The people began talking among themselves and mentioned Malik bin al-Dukhshum. One of them said: O Messenger of Allah, he is the refuge and shelter of the hypocrites, and they said much about him. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Does he not pray?" They said: Yes, O Messenger of Allah, but a prayer in which there is no good. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "I have been forbidden from killing those who pray." He (peace and blessings be upon him) said this twice.

Ali bin Zayd (may Allah have mercy on him) says: We were with Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him), and he said to his son Abu Bakr: Narrate to them the hadith of Itban bin Malik al-Ansari (may Allah be pleased with him). So Abu Bakr narrated this hadith to us while Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) was present. He said: I went out with my father to Syria. When he was returning from Syria, Sayyiduna Mahmud bin al-Rabi' al-Ansari (may Allah be pleased with him) walked with us and came to see us off. When he was about to part from us, he said: Shall I not narrate to you the hadith of Itban bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him)? We said: Certainly, do narrate it. He said: He told me that his eyesight went during the time of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), so he said: O Messenger of Allah, if only you would come to my house, mark out a place of prayer for me in it and pray there, so that I may take it as a mosque; my eyesight has gone and I lack the strength to go to the mosque. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) promised him a day on which he would come. When that day came, his (peace and blessings be upon him) Companions flocked to him (peace and blessings be upon him) and gathered in my house. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) came and heard them discussing who in Madinah was the harshest against the Companions of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and his greatest enemy, and they turned the matter to Malik bin al-Dukhshum. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked them: What are you talking about? Then he said: "Does he not testify that there is no true god but Allah and that I am the Messenger of Allah?" They said: O Messenger of Allah, he is a companion (of the hypocrites). He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Does he not testify that there is no true god but Allah and that I am the Messenger of Allah?" They said: Yes. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "By the One in whose Hand is my soul, if he says it truthfully from his heart, the Fire will never consume him." Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) said to me: Remember this hadith, for it is one of the treasures of knowledge. When we reached Madinah, we found Itban bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) alive, so I said to my father: Will you come to Itban so that we may ask him about the hadith that Mahmud narrated to us from him? So we went and asked him, and he narrated it to us himself.

Sayyiduna Mahmud bin al-Rabi' (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the eyesight of Sayyiduna Itban bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) went during the time of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), so he said: O Messenger of Allah, I am unable to pray with you in your mosque, and I would like you to pray with me in my mosque so that I may follow you in prayer. So the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) came to him. Then (the people) mentioned Malik bin al-Dukhshum before the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: He is the refuge and shelter of the hypocrites, to whom they turn for refuge, and their stronghold. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Does he not testify that there is no true god but Allah and that Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) is His servant and Messenger?" They said: Yes, but there is no good in his testimony. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "No servant bears this testimony truthfully from his heart and dies in that state except that Allah makes him forbidden to the Fire."

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Mahmud bin al-Rabi' (may Allah be pleased with him) that Sayyiduna Itban bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: I came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: My eyesight has become weak, and the floods come between me and the mosque of my people, and I would like you to come and pray at some place in my house so that I may take it as a mosque. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "I will do so, if Allah wills." Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) passed by Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) and took him along, and he set out with him (peace and blessings be upon him). He (peace and blessings be upon him) asked permission, then came in, and said while standing: "Where would you like me to pray?" I pointed to the place where I wanted. Then we kept him (peace and blessings be upon him) for some khazirah (a dish) that we had made for him (peace and blessings be upon him), and the people of the valley - that is, the people of the household - heard about it and gathered around him (peace and blessings be upon him) until the house was full. A man said: Where is Malik bin al-Dukhshun, or Ibn al-Dukhaysh? A man said: He is a hypocrite who loves neither Allah nor His Messenger. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Do not say that; he says 'La ilaha illallah' and seeks thereby the pleasure of Allah." He said: O Messenger of Allah, but we see his inclination and his talk directed towards the hypocrites. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) again said: "Do not say that; he says 'La ilaha illallah' and seeks thereby the pleasure of Allah." They said: Very well, O Messenger of Allah. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Whoever comes before Allah on the Day of Resurrection saying 'La ilaha illallah' and seeking thereby the pleasure of Allah, Allah will make him forbidden to the Fire." Mahmud says: I narrated this hadith to some people among whom was Abu Ayyub al-Ansari (may Allah be pleased with him), and he said: I do not think the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said what you have narrated. So I swore that if I went back to Itban bin Malik I would ask him. So I went to him and found him a very old man whose eyesight had gone, and he was the imam of his people. I sat beside him and asked him about this hadith, and he narrated to me the same hadith as he had narrated the first time. Ma'mar says: Whenever al-Zuhri narrated this hadith, he would say: "Then after that obligations and rulings were revealed, and we consider that the matter ends with them; so whoever is able not to change (from them), let him not change."

So the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) came and said: "Where would you like me to lead you in prayer?" He pointed to a corner of the house, and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) prayed there.

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Indeed Allah has made forbidden to the Fire the one who says 'La ilaha illallah', seeking thereby the pleasure of Allah, the Mighty and Majestic."
