It is narrated from Sayyiduna Adi bin Hatim (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, will speak to every one of you, with no interpreter between him and Him. He will look to his right and see nothing but his deeds, and he will look to his left and see nothing but his deeds, and he will look in front of him and see nothing but the Fire facing him. So protect yourselves from the Fire, even if only with a piece of a date (given in charity)."

One day I came to him (peace and blessings be upon him) while he (peace and blessings be upon him) was in a house full of the Companions. When he (peace and blessings be upon him) saw me, he (peace and blessings be upon him) made room for me until I sat at his (peace and blessings be upon him) side.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Adi bin Hatim (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "On the Day of Resurrection it will be commanded that some people be taken towards Paradise, until, when they draw near to it, smell its fragrance and see its palaces and what Allah has prepared in it for its inhabitants, it will be called out: 'Turn them away from it; they have no share in it.' So they will return with such regret as no one before ever felt. They will say: 'Our Lord, had You admitted us into Hell before showing us Your reward and the blessings You have prepared for Your friends (awliya), it would have been easier for us.' Allah Almighty will say: 'That is exactly what I intended for you. When you were alone, you would confront Me with major sins, and when you met people, you would show them humility. You would show off to people contrary to the state of your hearts. You feared people but did not fear Me; you honoured people but did not honour Me; and you abandoned (sins) for the sake of people but did not abandon them for My sake. Today I will make you taste a painful punishment, along with having deprived you of the reward.'"

Sayyiduna Adi bin Hatim (may Allah be pleased with him) said: When the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) returned from Badr, I was sitting with him (peace and blessings be upon him) when a man from the Ansar said: "We only met (helpless) people tied up like old women, so we slaughtered them." At this the face of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) changed, until it seemed to me as though pomegranate seeds had burst in it (that is, his face turned red). Then he said: "O son of my brother, do not say that. Those were the greatest chiefs of Quraysh. Had you seen them in their gatherings in Makkah, you would have been awed by them." By Allah, I went to Makkah and saw them sitting in the Mosque, and out of awe of them I did not even have the courage to greet them with salam. Then I remembered the saying of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him): "O people, love Quraysh, for whoever loves Quraysh has loved me, and whoever hates Quraysh has hated me. Allah has made my people beloved to me, so I do not hasten punishment for them, nor do I consider any blessing upon them too much. O Allah, You made the first of Quraysh taste punishment, so make the last of them taste bounty. Listen! Allah knew the love for my people that is in my heart, and He made me pleased concerning them." Allah Almighty said: "And warn your nearest kinsmen, and lower your wing to those of the believers who follow you" [Surah al-Shu'ara: 215], meaning my people. So all praise is for Allah, who made the Siddiq from my people, the martyr from my people, and the Imams (leaders) from my people. Indeed, Allah turned the servants over, back and front, and found the best of the Arabs to be Quraysh. It is the tree about which Allah Almighty said: "The example of a good word is like a good tree" [Surah Ibrahim: 24], meaning by it Quraysh. "Its root is firm" [Surah Ibrahim: 24], that is, its root is generosity and nobility. "And its branch is in the sky" [Surah Ibrahim: 24], that is, the honour with which Allah honoured them through Islam, to which He guided them and of which He made them worthy. Then Allah revealed concerning them a decisive surah in His Book: "For the familiarity of Quraysh, their familiarity with the journey of winter and summer, let them worship the Lord of this House, who fed them against hunger and gave them security from fear." [Surah Quraysh: 1]
Al-A'mash narrates, through Khaythamah, from Sayyiduna Adi bin Hatim (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: I never saw the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) when Quraysh were mentioned favourably in his presence except that it pleased him (peace and blessings be upon him), until that pleasure became visible on his (peace and blessings be upon him) face. And he (peace and blessings be upon him) used to recite this verse: "And indeed it is a reminder for you and for your people, and you will be questioned." [Surah al-Zukhruf: 44]
