Mu'jam Kabir Tabarani 14271 — the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said

حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عُثْمَانَ بْنِ أَبِي شَيْبَةَ، ثَنَا هَاشِمُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ سَعِيدِ بْنِ خُثَيْمٍ الْهِلَالِيُّ، ثنا أَبُو جُنَادَةَ - وَكَانَ يَسْكُنُ بَنِي سَلُولَ - ثَنَا الْأَعْمَشُ، عَنْ خَيْثَمَةَ بْنِ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ، عَنْ عَدِيِّ بْنِ حَاتِمٍ قَالَ: قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ: " يُؤْمَرُ يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ بِنَاسٍ إِلَى الْجَنَّةِ، حَتَّى إِذَا دَنَوْا مِنْهَا واسْتَنْشَقُوا رائِحَتَهَا ونَظَرُوا إِلَى قُصُورَهَا وَمَا أَعَدَّ اللهُ لِأهْلِهَا فِيهَا نُودُوا: اصْرِفُوهُمْ عَنْهَا لَا نَصِيبَ لَهُمْ فِيهَا فَيَرْجِعُونَ بِحَسْرَةٍ مَا رَجَعَ الْأَوَّلُونَ بِمِثْلِهَا فَيَقُولُونَ: رَبَّنَا لَو أَدْخَلْتَنَا النَّارَ قَبْلَ أَنْ تُرِيَنا مِنْ ثَوَابِكَ وَمَا أَعْدَدْتَ فِيهَا لِأَوْلِيَائِكَ كَانَ أَهْوَنَ عَلَيْنَا قَالَ: ذَلِكَ أَرَدْتُ بِكُمْ، إِذَا خَلَوْتُمْ بَارَزْتُمُونِي بِالْعِظَامِ وَإِذَا لَقِيتُمُ النَّاسَ لَقِيتُمُوهُمْ مُخْبِتينَ تُرَاءُونَ النَّاسَ بِخِلَافِ مَا تُعْطُونِي مِنْ قُلُوبِكُمْ، هِبْتُمُ النَّاسَ وَلَمْ تَهَابُونِي، وَأَجْلَلْتُمُ النَّاسَ وَلَمْ تُجِلُّونِي، وَتَرَكْتُمْ لِلنَّاسِ وَلَمْ تَتْرُكُوا لِي، فَالْيَوْمَ أُذِيقُكُمْ أَلِيمَ الْعَذَابِ مَعَ مَا حَرَمْتُكُمْ مِنَ الثَّوَابِ "
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Adi bin Hatim (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "On the Day of Resurrection it will be commanded that some people be taken towards Paradise, until, when they draw near to it, smell its fragrance and see its palaces and what Allah has prepared in it for its inhabitants, it will be called out: 'Turn them away from it; they have no share in it.' So they will return with such regret as no one before ever felt. They will say: 'Our Lord, had You admitted us into Hell before showing us Your reward and the blessings You have prepared for Your friends (awliya), it would have been easier for us.' Allah Almighty will say: 'That is exactly what I intended for you. When you were alone, you would confront Me with major sins, and when you met people, you would show them humility. You would show off to people contrary to the state of your hearts. You feared people but did not fear Me; you honoured people but did not honour Me; and you abandoned (sins) for the sake of people but did not abandon them for My sake. Today I will make you taste a painful punishment, along with having deprived you of the reward.'"
