My servant continues to seek My love through voluntary deeds until I love him; then I become his heart with which he understands, his tongue with which he speaks, and his sight with which he sees. Then when he calls upon Me, I answer him; when he asks of Me, I give him; and when he seeks My help, I help him. And the most beloved worship of My servant to Me is sincere goodwill."

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Umamah (may Allah be pleased with him): The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) went out and passed by the house of Sayyiduna Uthman bin Maz'un (may Allah be pleased with him). He (peace and blessings be upon him) stood at the door of the house and said: "O Kuhaylah, why are you neglecting your adornment? Is Uthman not present?" She said: Of course he is, but he has not lain on my bed for such and such a time, and he fasts continually and does not break his fast. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Tell him to come to me." When he came, she told him, and he set off and found him in the mosque and sat with him, but he (peace and blessings be upon him) turned away from him, so he wept and then said: I know that something about me has reached you. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Are you the one who fasts continually and stands in prayer all night, not putting your side on a bed?" Sayyiduna Uthman said: I did that seeking good. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Your eye has a right, your body has a right, and your wife has a right. So fast and break your fast, sleep and stand in prayer, and go to your wife, for I myself fast and break my fast, sleep and stand in prayer, and go to my wives. So whoever adopts my Sunnah is rightly guided, and whoever abandons it goes astray. For every deed has a period of zeal, and every zeal is followed by a lull; if the lull leads to heedlessness, that is ruin, but if, despite heedlessness, it returns to the obligatory duty, it does its owner no harm. So take on as much of deeds as you are able, for I have been sent with the easy and upright Hanifiyyah. So do not make the worship of your Lord a burden upon yourself; you do not know how long your life will be."

Sayyiduna Abu Umamah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: One day the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) went out, and with him (peace and blessings be upon him) were Sayyiduna Abu Bakr, Sayyiduna Umar, Sayyiduna Zayd bin Thabit, Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud, Sayyiduna Ubayy bin Ka'b and Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them), and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was riding his she-camel al-Jad'a'. When they had gone out, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) heard a man saying: Allahu akbar, Allahu akbar. So he (peace and blessings be upon him) stopped to listen. When he said again: Allahu akbar, Allahu akbar, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "He has borne witness to the truth, by the One in whose hand is my soul!" Then when he said: I bear witness that there is no god but Allah, he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "He has become free from Hell, by the One in whose hand is my soul!" He said this three times. Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "This is a man who keeps dogs." Sayyiduna Abu Umamah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Sayyiduna Ibn Umm Maktum (may Allah be pleased with him) came; he was blind, and he is the one concerning whom this verse was revealed: "He frowned and turned away because the blind man came to him" [Surah Abasa: 2]. He was a man of Quraysh. He came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: O Messenger of Allah, may my father and mother be ransomed for you, as you see, I have grown old, my bones have become weak, and my sight has gone, and I have a guide who does not cooperate with me in leading me (to the mosque). So do you find any concession for me to pray the prayers in my house? The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Can you hear the call to prayer (adhan) from your house?" He said: Yes, O Messenger of Allah. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "I do not find any concession for you. If this person who stays behind from the prayer in congregation knew what (reward) there is for the one who walks to it, he would surely come to it, even if he had to crawl on his hands and feet."

Sayyiduna Abu Umamah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: When this verse was revealed: "And warn your nearest kinsfolk" [Surah al-Shu'ara: 214], the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) gathered Banu Hashim and seated them at the door, and he gathered his wives and his household and seated them inside the house. Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) looked in on them and said: "O Banu Hashim! Buy yourselves from the Fire (through good deeds), strive to free your necks, and save yourselves from the punishment of Allah, for I have no power to avail you anything before Allah." Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) turned to his household and said: "O Aishah bint Abi Bakr! O Hafsah bint Umar! O Umm Salamah! O Fatimah bint Muhammad! And O Umm al-Zubayr, paternal aunt of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)! Buy yourselves from the Fire, and strive to free your necks, for I cannot ask anything from Allah for you, nor can I avail you anything." Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) wept and said: O my beloved! Will there be a day when you cannot avail us anything? He said: "Yes, on three occasions: where Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, says: 'And We shall set up the just scales on the Day of Resurrection, so no soul will be wronged in the least; and if there is the weight of a mustard seed, We shall bring it forth, and sufficient are We as reckoners' [Surah al-Anbiya: 47]; at that time I will not be able to avail you anything before Allah. And at the time of the light: Allah will complete the light of whomever He wills, and whomever He wills He will throw headlong into darkness that will cover him; at that time too I have no power to avail you anything before Allah, nor can I be of any use. And on the Sirat (the Bridge): whomever Allah wills He will keep safe and bring across, and whomever He wills He will throw headlong into Hell." Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) said: O my beloved! We know that the Scale has two pans; when something is placed in them, one becomes heavy and the other light. And we also know what the light and the darkness are. So what is the Sirat? He said: "It is a path between Paradise and Hell over which people will pass. It will be as thin as the edge of a razor, and the angels will be standing in ranks on the right and the left, snatching people with hooks like the thorns of the sa'dan plant, and they will be saying: 'O Lord, grant safety, grant safety!' And people will pass over it like the wind. Whomever Allah wills, He will keep safe, and whomever He wills, He will throw headlong into it."
