It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Umamah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was walking in intense heat when the strap of his sandal (peace and blessings be upon him) broke, so a man brought a strap and fitted it into his sandal (peace and blessings be upon him). The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "If only you knew what a great favour you have done for the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)! If only you knew what a great favour you have done for the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) (you would be amazed)!"

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Umamah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) passed by a man who was reciting 'Qul huwa Allahu ahad' (Say: He is Allah, the One), and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "He has made (Paradise) obligatory (for himself); Paradise has become due for him."
Hadith Referenceالمعجم الكبير للطبراني / باب الصاد / 7835
Sayyiduna Abu Umamah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: At the Farewell Hajj, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) stood up, and at that time Sayyiduna al-Fadl bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) was riding behind him (peace and blessings be upon him) on a camel, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O people, take knowledge before knowledge is taken away, and before knowledge is raised up." And Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, had revealed: "O you who believe, do not ask about things which, if made plain to you, would distress you" [Surah al-Ma'idah: 101], and we used to remember it often, and it kept us from asking him (peace and blessings be upon him). So we went to a bedouin and bribed him with a cloak, and he wore it until I saw the edge of the cloak over his right eyebrow. Then we said to him: Ask the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). So he said: O Prophet of Allah, how will knowledge be taken away from us when copies of the Qur'an are among us, we have learned from them, and we have taught them to our women, our children and our servants? Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) raised his head, and redness from anger had come over his face (peace and blessings be upon him), and he said: "May your mother be bereaved of you! These Jews and Christians too have scriptures among them, yet they have not acted upon anything that their prophets brought them. Listen! The departure of knowledge means that its people depart," saying it three times.

Sayyiduna Abu Umamah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: We went out with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) on one of his expeditions (peace and blessings be upon him), and a man passed by a cave in which there was some water. His heart desired to stay in that cave, live on the water in it, eat some of the herbs around it, and withdraw from the world. Then he said: What if I go to the Prophet of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and mention this to him? If he (peace and blessings be upon him) permits me, I will do it; otherwise I will not. So he came to him (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: O Prophet of Allah, I passed by a cave in which I found enough water and herbs to sustain me, and my heart told me to stay there and withdraw from the world. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "I was not sent with Judaism or Christianity; rather, I was sent with the easy and upright Hanifiyyah. By the One in whose hand is my soul, a journey in the morning or the evening in the path of Allah is better than the world and everything in it, and for one of you to stand in the ranks (of battle) is better than his prayer of sixty years."

Sayyiduna Abu Umamah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: On a day of intense heat, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) passed by towards Baqi' al-Gharqad, and the people were walking behind him (peace and blessings be upon him). When he (peace and blessings be upon him) heard the sound of their sandals, it weighed heavily on his heart (peace and blessings be upon him), so he (peace and blessings be upon him) stopped until he had put them in front of him, so that no trace of arrogance would enter his heart (peace and blessings be upon him). When he (peace and blessings be upon him) passed by Baqi' al-Gharqad, he saw that two men had been buried in two graves. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) stood and said: "Whom did you bury here today?" The people said: O Prophet of Allah, so-and-so. He said: "These two are now being punished and tried in their graves." The people said: O Messenger of Allah, what is the reason for that? He said: "One of them used to go about spreading tales, and the other did not guard himself against urine." Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) took a fresh palm stalk, split it, and then placed it on the two graves. The people said: O Prophet of Allah, why did you do that? He said: "So that their punishment may be lightened." The people said: O Prophet of Allah, how long will they be punished? He said: "It is a matter of the unseen which no one knows except Allah." He said: "Were it not that doubt would enter your hearts, or that you would exaggerate in speech, you would hear what I hear."
Hadith Referenceالمعجم الكبير للطبراني / باب الصاد / 7838
Sayyiduna Abu Umamah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: We sat with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and he (peace and blessings be upon him) admonished us and moved our hearts to tenderness. Sayyiduna Sa'd bin Abi Waqqas (may Allah be pleased with him) began to weep, wept a great deal, and said: If only I had died! So the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O Sa'd, do you wish for death in my presence?" He (peace and blessings be upon him) repeated this three times, then said: "O Sa'd, if you were created for Paradise, then that your life be long and your deeds good is better for you; and if you were created for Hell, then how evil it is that you should hasten towards it."
Hadith Referenceالمعجم الكبير للطبراني / باب الصاد / 7839
Sayyiduna Abu Umamah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was sitting, and the people thought that revelation was descending upon him (peace and blessings be upon him), so they held back from approaching him (peace and blessings be upon him), until Sayyiduna Abu Dharr (may Allah be pleased with him) came, pressed forward and sat with him (peace and blessings be upon him). He (peace and blessings be upon him) turned to him and said: "O Abu Dharr, have you prayed today?" He said: No. He said: "Stand and pray." When he had prayed four rak'ahs of the forenoon (duha) prayer, he (peace and blessings be upon him) turned to him and said: "O Abu Dharr, have you sought refuge from the evil of the devils among jinn and mankind?" He said: O Prophet of Allah, does mankind have devils too? He said: "Yes, the devils of mankind and jinn, who inspire one another with embellished speech by way of deception." Then he said: "O Abu Dharr, shall I not teach you a word from the treasures of Paradise?" I said: Of course, may Allah make me a ransom for you. He said: "Say: 'La hawla wa la quwwata illa billah' (there is no power and no strength except with Allah)." Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) fell silent with me until I felt his speech (peace and blessings be upon him) was slow in coming. I said: O Prophet of Allah, we were people of the Jahiliyyah and idol worship, then Allah sent you as a mercy to all the worlds; tell me, what is prayer? He said: "It is an excellent thing that has been prescribed; whoever wishes may do little and whoever wishes may do much." I said: O Prophet of Allah, what is fasting? He said: "A reward multiplied many times over, and with Allah there is more." I said: O Prophet of Allah, which charity is best? He said: "That which is given secretly to a needy person, and the effort of one who has little." I said: O Prophet of Allah, which martyr is best? He said: "The one whose blood is shed and whose horse is wounded." I said: O Prophet of Allah, which is the greatest verse revealed to you? He said: "Allah, there is no god but He, the Ever-Living, the Sustainer of all" [Surah al-Baqarah: 255], "Ayat al-Kursi." I said: O Prophet of Allah, which slave is best (to free)? He said: "The one most costly in price and most precious to his owners." I said: O Prophet of Allah, who was the first of the prophets? He said: "Adam (peace be upon him)." I said: O Prophet of Allah, was Adam (peace be upon him) a prophet? He said: "Yes, a prophet to whom Allah spoke. Allah created him with His own hand and breathed into him of His spirit, then said to him: 'O Adam, come forward.'" I said: O Prophet of Allah, what is the total number of the prophets? He said: "One hundred and twenty-four thousand, and of them the messengers are three hundred and fifteen, a great multitude."

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Umamah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Whoever fasts one day in the path of Allah, Allah places a distance of a hundred years between him and Hell."
Hadith Referenceالمعجم الكبير للطبراني / باب الصاد / 7841
It is narrated from Abu Umamah (may Allah be pleased with him) that Tha'labah bin Hatib al-Ansari (may Allah be pleased with him) came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: O Messenger of Allah, supplicate to Allah that He grant me provision. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Woe to you, O Tha'labah! A little (wealth) for which you can give thanks is better than much (wealth) which you cannot bear." Then he came to him (peace and blessings be upon him) again and said: O Messenger of Allah, supplicate to Allah that He grant me wealth. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Woe to you, O Tha'labah! Do you not wish to be like the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)? By Allah, if I wished that the mountains should flow for me as gold and silver, they would flow." Then he came to him (peace and blessings be upon him) again and said: O Messenger of Allah, supplicate to Allah that He grant me wealth; by Allah, if Allah gives me wealth, I will give every rightful claimant his due. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) supplicated: "O Allah, grant Tha'labah wealth." So he acquired goats, which multiplied as worms multiply, until the streets of Madinah became too narrow for them, so he moved away (from the town). He would attend the prayer with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and then go out (to his goats). Then they multiplied until the pastures of Madinah were not enough for him, so he moved further away. He would attend the Friday prayer with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and then go out. Then they multiplied further, so he moved still further away, until he abandoned the Friday prayer and the congregations. He would (only) meet the caravans and ask: What news do you have? What is the state of the people?
Thereupon Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, revealed this verse to His Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him): "Take from their wealth a charity by which you purify them and cause them to grow" [al-Tawbah: 103]. The narrator said: So the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) appointed two men to collect the charities, one from the Ansar and one from Banu Sulaym, and wrote for them the rules of the charity and its amounts, and ordered them to collect charity from the people and to pass by Tha'labah as well and take the charity of his wealth from him. So they did so, until they went to Tha'labah and read to him the letter of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). He said: First collect from the other people; when you have finished, pass by me. So they did that, and then when they came (back) to Tha'labah, he said: By Allah, this is nothing but the sister of the jizyah! So the two of them set off back until they reached the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him).
Concerning this, Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, revealed to His Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) the verses from "And among them are those who made a covenant with Allah: If He gives us of His bounty" [al-Tawbah: 75] up to "they used to lie" [al-Tawbah: 77].
The narrator said: So a man of the Ansar, a close relative of Tha'labah, mounted a riding animal, went to Tha'labah and said: Woe to you, O Tha'labah! You are ruined; Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, has revealed such verses of the Qur'an about you. So Tha'labah came (to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)), putting dust on his head and weeping, saying: O Messenger of Allah, O Messenger of Allah! But the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) did not accept his charity until Allah took the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) (from this world).
Then, after the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), he came to Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) and said: O Abu Bakr, you know my standing among my people and my position with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), so accept (my charity) from me. But he refused to accept it. Then he came to Umar (may Allah be pleased with him), and he too refused to accept (the charity) from him. Then he came to Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him), and he too refused to accept (the charity) from him. Then Tha'labah died during the caliphate of Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him).
