Sayyiduna Sahl bin Sa'd (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated: A dispute broke out among Banu Amr bin Awf until they began throwing stones at one another. This was mentioned to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), so he (peace and blessings be upon him) went out to make peace between them. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was delayed until Bilal (may Allah be pleased with him) called the adhan for the prayer. Then he came to Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) and said to him: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) has been delayed; will you establish the prayer? Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Yes. So he called the iqamah for the prayer, and Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) went forward and said the takbir. Meanwhile the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) arrived, and the people began clapping for Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) (to alert him), and he (Abu Bakr, may Allah be pleased with him) would not turn around during his prayer. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) came forward, passing through the rows, until Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) heard his (peace and blessings be upon him) movement behind him and began to step back. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O Abu Bakr, stay as you are and lead us in prayer." Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) raised his hand towards the sky in order to step back, and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) went forward and led the people in prayer. When he (peace and blessings be upon him) had finished, he said: "O Abu Bakr, when I ordered you to lead the people in prayer, what prevented you from leading them?" Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) said: O Messenger of Allah, may my father and mother be ransomed for you, it is not fitting for the son of Abu Quhafah to lead the prayer in front of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Why did you raise both your hands towards the sky?" He said: I praised Allah when you ordered me to lead you in prayer. Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) turned to the people and said: "O people, what is the matter with you that when something happens to you in prayer you start clapping? Clapping is only for women. Whoever has something happen to him in his prayer, let him say subhan Allah, and the one next to him should turn his attention to him."
