It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: I said to Sayyiduna al-Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him): "Ask the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) to appoint you over the collection of sadaqah." So he asked him, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "We will not appoint you over the washings of people's sins (the sadaqah)."
The chain of this hadith is hasan (good). Imam Abu Bakr bin Abi Shaybah has also narrated it in the same way through the route of Qabisah.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Rabi'ah bin al-Harith bin Abd al-Muttalib (may Allah be pleased with him) that members of Banu Abd al-Muttalib came to Sayyiduna al-Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) and said: "Speak to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) on our behalf, so that he appoints us too over the collection of zakah (si'ayah) and other administrative tasks, just as he appoints other people." While they were still consulting one another about this, Sayyiduna Ali bin Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him) suddenly arrived. Sayyiduna al-Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) called him and said: "Your people and your cousins have gathered here. How good it would be if you spoke to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) in their favour, so that he entrusts them with the collection of sadaqah." At this Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "O Banu Abd al-Muttalib! Allah Almighty has not at all approved for you that He should feed you the dirt of people's hands (that is, zakah and sadaqah)." Hearing this, Rabi'ah bin al-Harith said: "Leave this matter; you will get no good of the kind you seek from him." Then the narrator mentioned the full hadith.
This report is also found, in meaning, with Imam Muslim, Imam Abu Dawud and other hadith scholars. In one narration of Sahih Muslim the words are reported that "Rabi'ah drew aside from them", but no explanation of it was given there, whereas in this present report that ambiguity is explained by his words: "You will find no good with this man."

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that Nawfal bin al-Harith sent his two sons to the Prophet of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) with the instruction: "Go, both of you, to your uncle; perhaps he will entrust you with the collection of sadaqah, so that you gain some wealth and are able to marry." On the way they met Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him). When he asked: "Where are you two going?" they explained their purpose, whereupon Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) advised them to go back, and they returned. In the evening their father ordered them again to go to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). When they reached his (peace and blessings be upon him) door and sought permission, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said to the Mother of the Believers Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her): "Let down your curtain and bring in these two sons of my uncle." So the two of them presented their need before the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and the Prophet of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said to them: "It is not lawful for you, that is, for the People of the House, to take anything at all from the sadaqah, for it is the washings of people's hands. Indeed your right lies in the khums (the fifth of the spoils of war), and in the khums there is a share for you sufficient to meet your needs or to make you free of want."

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Rushayd bin Malik Abu Amirah (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: One day I was sitting in the blessed gathering of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) when a man came with a platter of dates. He (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: "What is this? Sadaqah or a gift?" The man said: "(Exalted one!) It is sadaqah." He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Then present it to the people (who are present here)." Meanwhile Sayyiduna al-Hasan (may Allah be pleased with him) was playing on the ground in front of him (peace and blessings be upon him). He picked up a date and put it in his mouth. When the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) saw this, he put his blessed hand into the child's mouth, took out the date and threw it away, then said: "Indeed we, the family of Muhammad, do not eat sadaqah."
Imam al-Bawardi narrated it from Muhammad bin Ayyub, and he from Ahmad bin Yunus. Imam al-Tabarani narrated it through Abu Zur'ah and Abu Nu'aym; both of them said: Muqarrin narrated this report to us. Ibn Mandah and Ibn al-Sakan also narrated it through al-Barudi, while Imam al-Bukhari (may Allah have mercy on him) recorded it in his book al-Tarikh through the chain of Abu Nu'aym.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) sent Sayyiduna Arqam bin Abi Arqam (may Allah be pleased with him) (as a collector) to collect sadaqah. He passed by Sayyiduna Abu Rafi' (may Allah be pleased with him) and asked Abu Rafi' to come along with him. Then he came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and mentioned this to him, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O Abu Rafi'! Sadaqah is unlawful for Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) and for the family of Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him), and the freed slave of a people is also (in ruling and relation) one of them, or (he said:) is like their own selves."
In the chain of this report Imam Shu'bah differed from Ibn Abi Layla: he narrated it from al-Hakam, from Ibn Ubaydullah bin Abi Rafi', from his father, from Sayyiduna Abu Rafi' (may Allah be pleased with him) himself.

Ata bin al-Sa'ib (may Allah have mercy on him) relates: I went to Sayyidah Umm Kulthum (may Allah be pleased with her), the daughter of Sayyiduna Ali bin Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him). I saw in the house a bed woven from palm fibre, a pillow and a hanging waterskin. I began to look closely (at this asceticism and simplicity), and she asked: "What are you looking at? By the grace of Allah we are well. Even if we had nothing but the sadaqah (endowed wealth) of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) or of Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him), it would suffice us." The narrator says: I said: "These are some dirhams which Sayyiduna Salman al-Farisi (may Allah be pleased with him) bequeathed for a freed slave-woman of his named Ruqayyah." She said: "I do not know her." I said: "Please accept them (for distribution)." She said: "I fear they may be sadaqah, and sadaqah is not lawful for us (the People of the House). So go yourself and give them in charity." I insisted that she distribute them herself, but she refused and said: "Only last night a purse (a bag of money) came from Iraq, but I refused to accept it and sent it back."
