Al-Matalib al-'Aliyah 915 — Charity is forbidden for Banu Hashim

Ata bin al-Sa'ib (may Allah have mercy on him) relates: I went to Sayyidah Umm Kulthum (may Allah be pleased with her), the daughter of Sayyiduna Ali bin Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him). I saw in the house a bed woven from palm fibre, a pillow and a hanging waterskin. I began to look closely (at this asceticism and simplicity), and she asked: "What are you looking at? By the grace of Allah we are well. Even if we had nothing but the sadaqah (endowed wealth) of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) or of Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him), it would suffice us." The narrator says: I said: "These are some dirhams which Sayyiduna Salman al-Farisi (may Allah be pleased with him) bequeathed for a freed slave-woman of his named Ruqayyah." She said: "I do not know her." I said: "Please accept them (for distribution)." She said: "I fear they may be sadaqah, and sadaqah is not lawful for us (the People of the House). So go yourself and give them in charity." I insisted that she distribute them herself, but she refused and said: "Only last night a purse (a bag of money) came from Iraq, but I refused to accept it and sent it back."
