It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Rabi'ah bin al-Harith bin Abd al-Muttalib (may Allah be pleased with him) that members of Banu Abd al-Muttalib came to Sayyiduna al-Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) and said: "Speak to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) on our behalf, so that he appoints us too over the collection of zakah (si'ayah) and other administrative tasks, just as he appoints other people." While they were still consulting one another about this, Sayyiduna Ali bin Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him) suddenly arrived. Sayyiduna al-Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) called him and said: "Your people and your cousins have gathered here. How good it would be if you spoke to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) in their favour, so that he entrusts them with the collection of sadaqah." At this Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "O Banu Abd al-Muttalib! Allah Almighty has not at all approved for you that He should feed you the dirt of people's hands (that is, zakah and sadaqah)." Hearing this, Rabi'ah bin al-Harith said: "Leave this matter; you will get no good of the kind you seek from him." Then the narrator mentioned the full hadith.
This report is also found, in meaning, with Imam Muslim, Imam Abu Dawud and other hadith scholars. In one narration of Sahih Muslim the words are reported that "Rabi'ah drew aside from them", but no explanation of it was given there, whereas in this present report that ambiguity is explained by his words: "You will find no good with this man."
