It is narrated from Tawus (may Allah have mercy on him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) sent Sayyiduna Mu'adh bin Jabal (may Allah be pleased with him) to Yemen (as a governor), and in collecting zakah there he used to accept garments in exchange for (in place of) wheat and barley.
The Hanafi imams and other jurists take this hadith as evidence that in zakah it is permissible to accept, instead of the original kind, its value or other useful items as a substitute, just as Sayyiduna Mu'adh (may Allah be pleased with him) preferred Yemeni garments over grain in view of the needs of the people of Makkah and Madinah.
