Amr bin Maymun al-Awdi narrates: I was sitting with Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) when nine people came to him. They said to Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both): O Ibn Abbas, either you get up and come with us, or let us be in private. Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: Rather, I will get up and come with you. The narrator says: In those days he was healthy and had not yet lost his sight. The narrator says: They went aside and talked among themselves, and I do not know what they said. The narrator says: Then after a while Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) came back, shaking out his garment and saying: Uff! He kept on saying, Uff! They were disparaging a man who has ten distinctions. They were disparaging a man about whom the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: I will certainly send a man whom Allah Almighty will never disgrace; he loves Allah and His Messenger. That day everyone hoped that he might be given this opportunity. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: Where is Ali? The people submitted: He is at his lodging, grinding flour! The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Could none of you grind the flour? The narrator says: Then Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) came, suffering from eye inflammation, and he could hardly see. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) applied his saliva to his eyes, then waved the banner three times and gave it to him. Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) brought Sayyidah Safiyyah bint Huyayy (may Allah be pleased with her). The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) sent so-and-so with Surah al-Tawbah, then he sent Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) after him, and he took the command of Surah al-Tawbah from him. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: No one may go with this command except a person who is from me and I am from him (that is, connected by family ties). The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to his cousins: Which of you will be my wali (ally) in this world and the Hereafter? They refused. The narrator says: Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) submitted: I will be your wali in this world and the Hereafter. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: You are my wali in this world and the Hereafter. The narrator says: He was the first person among the people to accept Islam after Sayyidah Khadijah (may Allah be pleased with her). Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) took his cloth and placed it over Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him), Sayyidah Fatimah (may Allah be pleased with her), Sayyiduna Hasan (may Allah be pleased with him) and Sayyiduna Husayn (may Allah be pleased with him), and said: Allah Almighty says: "O People of the House, Allah intends only to remove impurity from you and to purify you thoroughly." Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) had sold his own self: he put on the garment of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and then slept in his place. The polytheists used to throw stones at the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). When Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) came, Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) was sleeping. Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) thought that this was the Prophet of Allah, so he said: O Prophet of Allah! Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said to him: The Prophet of Allah has left; he has gone towards the well of Maymunah, so catch up with him. So Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) went and entered the cave with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: Stones kept being thrown at Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) just as they used to be thrown at the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and he kept writhing. He had wrapped his head in the cover and did not bring it out until morning. Then he uncovered his head, and the people said: You are a wretch! When we used to throw pebbles at your master, he did not writhe, while you were writhing; we found that strange. Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) set out with the people for the Battle of Tabuk, and Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) submitted to him: I will go with you too. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to him: No. Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) began to weep. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to him: Are you not pleased that your relation to me should be what Sayyiduna Harun (peace be upon him) had to Sayyiduna Musa (peace be upon him), except that you will not be a prophet after me? It is not fitting for anyone, when I go, (to be my deputy); rather, you will be my deputy. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) also said to Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him): "You are the wali of every believer after me." Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) had all the doors of the mosque closed except the particular door of Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him). Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) also said: Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) could enter the mosque in a state of janabah, because it was his path; he had no other path. Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Whoever I am the mawla of, Ali too is his mawla." Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: Allah Almighty has told us in the Qur'an that He is pleased with those Companions who pledged allegiance beneath the tree, and Allah Almighty knows what is in their hearts; so has Allah Almighty told us that He became angry with them after that? Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) also said that when Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) asked permission, saying: Permit me and I will strike off his neck, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to him: Would you do that? What do you know? Perhaps Allah Almighty looked upon the people of Badr and said: Do whatever you wish. (What Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) meant was this: Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) also had the honour of taking part in the Pledge of Ridwan and the Battle of Badr, so he too is included in this virtue.)
Ahmad recorded it, and al-Tabarani in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir and al-Mu'jam al-Awsat in abridged form. The narrators of Ahmad are the narrators of the Sahih, except Abu Balj al-Fazari, who is thiqah (trustworthy), though there is some softness (lin) in him.

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates: In the blessed time of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) we used to say that the Messenger of Allah was the best of all people, then Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him), then Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him). Then Sayyiduna Ali bin Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him) was given three distinctions; if I had even one of them, it would be dearer to me than red camels: the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) married him to his daughter, and she bore him children; the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) had all the doors of the mosque closed except his particular door; and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) gave him the banner at the Battle of Khaybar.
Ahmad and Abu Ya'la recorded it, and the narrators of both are the narrators of the Sahih.

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates: Once I was with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) in some shade in Madinah. We were looking for Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) when we reached a garden, and we saw Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) sleeping on the ground, covered in dust. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: I would not blame people if they gave you the kunyah Abu Turab. The narrator says: I saw Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him); his face had changed, and this weighed heavily on him. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: O Ali, shall I not make you pleased? He submitted: Yes indeed. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: You are my brother and my minister (wazir). You will pay off my debt, fulfil my promises and discharge my obligations. Whoever loves you during my lifetime has fulfilled his duty; and whoever loves you during your lifetime after me (or: whoever loves you all his life after me), Allah Almighty will seal his end with security and faith and will keep him safe on the Day of Terror. And whoever dies while hating you, O Ali, will die the death of the Jahiliyyah, and Allah Almighty will call him to account for the deeds he did in Islam.
Al-Tabarani recorded it, and its chain contains a narrator whom I do not know.
