بَابُ اكْتِحَالِهِ بِرِيقِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ - صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ - وَكِفَايَتِهِ الرَّمَدَ ، وَالْحَرَّ ، وَالْبَرْدَ .
The saliva of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) applied to the eyes of Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) like kohl, and its protecting him from eye inflammation, heat and cold

عَنْ عَلِيٍّ قَالَ : مَا رَمَدْتُ وَلَا صَدَّعْتُ مُنْذُ مَسَحَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ - صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ - وَجْهِي ، وَتَفَلَ فِي عَيْنِي ، يَوْمَ خَيْبَرَ حِينَ أَعْطَانِي الرَّايَةَ .
رَوَاهُ أَبُو يَعْلَى وَأَحْمَدُ بِاخْتِصَارٍ ، وَرِجَالُهُمَا رِجَالُ الصَّحِيحِ غَيْرَ أُمِّ مُوسَى ، وَحَدِيثُهَا مُسْتَقِيمٌ .
رَوَاهُ أَبُو يَعْلَى وَأَحْمَدُ بِاخْتِصَارٍ ، وَرِجَالُهُمَا رِجَالُ الصَّحِيحِ غَيْرَ أُمِّ مُوسَى ، وَحَدِيثُهَا مُسْتَقِيمٌ .
Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: On the day of Khaybar, when the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) gave me the banner, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) passed his hand over my face and put his saliva in my eyes; after that I never suffered from eye inflammation or headache.
Abu Ya'la recorded it, and Ahmad in abridged form; the narrators of both are the narrators of the Sahih, except Umm Musa, and her hadith is mustaqim (sound).

وَعَنْ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ أَبِي لَيْلَى قَالَ : خَرَجَ عَلَيْنَا عَلِيُّ بْنُ أَبِي طَالِبٍ فِي الْحَرِّ الشَّدِيدِ وَعَلَيْهِ ثِيَابُ الشِّتَاءِ ، وَخَرَجَ عَلَيْنَا فِي الشِّتَاءِ وَعَلَيْهِ ثِيَابُ الصَّيْفِ ، ثُمَّ دَعَا بِمَاءِ مَشْرَبِهِ ، ثُمَّ مَسَحَ الْعَرَقَ عَنْ جَبْهَتِهِ ، ثُمَّ رَجَعَ إِلَى ،بَيْتِهِ ، فَقُلْتُ لِأَبِي : يَا أَبَتَاهُ ، أَمَا رَأَيْتَ مَا صَنَعَ أَمِيرُ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ ؟ خَرَجَ عَلَيْنَا فِي الشِّتَاءِ عَلَيْهِ ثِيَابُ الصَّيْفِ ، وَخَرَجَ عَلَيْنَا فِي الصَّيْفِ وَعَلَيْهِ ثِيَابُ الشِّتَاءِ ؟ فَقَالَ أَبُو لَيْلَى : مَا فَطِنْتُ ، فَأَخَذَ بِيَدِ ابْنِهِ فَأَتَى عَلِيًّا ، فَقَالَ لَهُ الَّذِي صَنَعَ ، فَقَالَ لَهُ عَلِيٌّ : إِنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ - صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ - كَانَ بَعَثَنِي وَأَنَا أَرْمَدُ فَبَزَقَ فِي عَيْنِي ، ثُمَّ قَالَ : " افْتَحْ عَيْنَيْكَ " . فَفَتَحْتُهُمَا فَمَا اشْتَكَيْتُهُمَا حَتَّى السَّاعَةَ ، وَدَعَا لِي فَقَالَ : " اللَّهُمَّ أَذْهِبْ عَنْهُ الْحَرَّ وَالْبَرْدَ " . فَمَا وَجَدْتُ حَرًّا وَلَا بَرْدًا حَتَّى يَوْمِي هَذَا .
رَوَاهُ الطَّبَرَانِيُّ فِي الْأَوْسَطِ ، وَإِسْنَادُهُ حَسَنٌ .

Abd al-Rahman bin Abi Layla narrates: On a day of intense heat Sayyiduna Ali bin Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him) came out to us wearing winter clothes, and once in winter he came out to us wearing summer clothes. Then once he brought water from his upper room, then wiped the sweat from his forehead, and then went back to his house. I said to my father: O father, did you see what the Commander of the Believers did? He came out to us in winter wearing summer clothes, and he came out to us in summer wearing winter clothes. Sayyiduna Abu Layla (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I had not noticed. Then he took his son by the hand and went to Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) and asked Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) about his conduct. Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) told him: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) sent me while I was suffering from eye inflammation. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) put his saliva in my eyes and then said: Open your eyes. I opened my eyes, and from that time until today I have never had any complaint in my eyes. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) prayed for me, saying: O Allah, remove heat and cold from him! Since then, until this day, I have never felt heat or cold.

وَفِي رِوَايَةٍ أُخْرَى عِنْدَهُ : عَنْ سُوَيْدِ بْنِ غَفَلَةَ قَالَ : لَقِينَا عَلِيًّا وَعَلَيْهِ ثَوْبَانِ فِي الشِّتَاءِ ، فَقُلْنَا : لَا تَغْتَرُّ بِأَرْضِنَا هَذِهِ فَإِنَّ أَرْضَنَا هَذِهِ مُقِرَّةٌ لَيْسَتْ مِثْلَ أَرْضِكَ . قَالَ : فَإِنِّي كُنْتُ مَقْرُورًا ، فَلَمَّا بَعَثَنِي رَسُولُ اللَّهِ - صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ - إِلَى خَيْبَرَ قُلْتُ : إِنِّي أَرْمَدُ ، فَتَفَلَ فِي عَيْنِي ، فَمَا وَجَدْتُ حَرًّا وَلَا بَرْدًا وَلَا رَمَدَتْ عَيْنَايَ .
In another narration recorded by him, the wording is: Suwayd bin Ghafalah narrates: We met Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) and he was wearing two garments; this was in winter. We said: Sir, do not be misled about this land of ours, for this land of ours is not like your land. Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I was someone who felt the cold (or: who felt the cold a great deal). When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) sent me to Khaybar, I submitted: I am suffering from eye inflammation. So the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) put his saliva in my eyes, and after that I never felt heat or cold, nor did I ever suffer from eye inflammation.
وَعَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ - يَعْنِي ابْنَ مَسْعُودٍ - قَالَ : رَأَيْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ - صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ - كَحَّلَ عَيْنَ عَلِيٍّ بِرِيقِهِ .
رَوَاهُ الطَّبَرَانِيُّ ، وَفِيهِ الْمُعَلَّى بْنُ عِرْفَانَ ، وَهُوَ مَتْرُوكٌ .

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: I saw the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) apply his saliva like kohl to the eye of Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him).
