Abd al-Rahman bin Abi Umayyah narrates: Habib bin Maslamah came to Sayyiduna Qays bin Sa'd bin Ubadah (may Allah be pleased with him) during the first fitnah (civil strife) while he was on his horse. He moved back from the saddle and said: "Ride." He refused, and Sayyiduna Qays bin Sa'd (may Allah be pleased with him) said to him: I heard the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) say: "The owner of the animal has more right to its front." Habib said: "I am not unaware of what the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, but I fear for you."
Ahmad recorded it, and al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Awsat and al-Mu'jam al-Kabir. Ahmad's narrators are thiqat (trustworthy).

Sayyiduna Qays bin Sa'd (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) came to us. We set out water for him and he took a bath. We brought him a wrap dyed with wars (saffron-like dye), and he wrapped himself in it. It is as if I can still see the trace of the wars on his belly. Then we brought him a donkey to ride, and he said: "The owner of the donkey has more right to the front of his donkey." We said: "O Messenger of Allah! Then the donkey is yours."
(Al-Haythami says:) I say: Ibn Majah recorded only the part of this report up to the word 'ukanihi' (the folds of his belly).
Ahmad recorded it. Its chain contains Ibn Abi Layla, and he has a poor memory.

Sayyiduna Ismah bin Malik al-Khatmi (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) came to visit us at Quba'. When he wanted to return, we brought him a donkey that took short steps, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) mounted it. We said: "O Messenger of Allah! This boy will go with you and bring the animal back." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The owner of the animal has more right to its front." We said: "O Messenger of Allah! You ride it, and you send it back to us." So the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) went on it and then sent it back to us, and when it came back, it was stepping so briskly that it could not be kept pace with.

Imam Muhammad bin Ali bin Husayn narrates: Sayyiduna Imam Husayn (may Allah be pleased with him) set out to go to his land on the outer side of al-Harrah. The narrator says: We were walking along when we met Sayyiduna al-Nu'man bin Bashir (may Allah be pleased with him), who was riding a mule. He got down from the mule, brought it close to Imam Husayn (may Allah be pleased with him) and said: "O Abu Abdullah, ride it." Imam Husayn disliked this, and this went back and forth until Sayyiduna al-Nu'man (may Allah be pleased with him) adjured Sayyiduna Imam Husayn (may Allah be pleased with him) by oath. Then Imam Husayn agreed to ride and said: "By making me swear, you have bound me to something I dislike. Now you ride on the front of the animal and I will sit behind you, because I heard Sayyidah Fatimah (may Allah be pleased with her), the daughter of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), relate that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: 'A man has more right to the front of his animal, the best part of his bedding, and (leading) the prayer in his own house, except when he is an imam around whom people gather.'" Sayyiduna al-Nu'man (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "The daughter of the Messenger of Allah has spoken the truth. I heard my father, Sayyiduna Bashir (may Allah be pleased with him), relate the same thing that Sayyidah Fatimah (may Allah be pleased with her) related, except that my father (narrated these words): the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: 'Except with permission.'" Then Sayyiduna Imam Husayn (may Allah be pleased with him) rode.
Al-Tabarani recorded it. Its chain contains al-Hakam bin Abdullah al-Ayli, and he is matruk (abandoned).

Imam Muhammad bin Ali bin Husayn narrates: I set out with my grandfather, Sayyiduna Imam Husayn bin Ali (may Allah be pleased with them both), towards a piece of land of his at al-Zarniq, which was in al-Bayda. The son of Sayyiduna al-Nu'man bin Bashir (may Allah be pleased with him) met us; he was riding a mule. He got down from his mule and said to Imam Husayn (may Allah be pleased with him): "O Abu Abdullah, please ride." Imam Husayn did not accept this. That man kept adjuring Imam Husayn by oath, until Imam Husayn said: "You have bound me to something I dislike. I will narrate to you a hadith which Sayyidah Fatimah (may Allah be pleased with her) narrated to me, that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: 'A man has more right to the front part of his riding animal, the prominent part of his bedding, and (leading) the prayer in his house.'" The son of Sayyiduna al-Nu'man (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "Sayyidah Fatimah (may Allah be pleased with her) has spoken the truth. My father narrated to me that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said" - then the narrator mentioned the hadith as before, in which there are these words: the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Unless he (the owner) gives permission, in which case the ruling is different."
Al-Tabarani recorded it, and its chain contains narrators whom I do not know.

Sayyiduna Abu Tamimah al-Hujaymi (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: Once I was on my donkey when I met the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). I moved back onto the rear part of the donkey and said: "O Messenger of Allah, may my father and mother be sacrificed for you, please ride." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "You have more right to the front part of your donkey." I said: "O Messenger of Allah, this donkey is yours." So the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) rode on its front part and I rode on the rear part of the donkey.
Al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Awsat. Its chain contains a narrator, Hisham bin Lahiq, whom Imam Ahmad declared matruk (abandoned) and whom others also called da'if (weak), whereas Imam al-Nasa'i (may Allah have mercy on him) declared him strong; and its chain contains narrators whom I do not know.

Muhajir, the freed slave of the family of Ziyad, narrates: Once I was riding my donkey, and because it was small my feet were nearly reaching the ground. Meanwhile the Commander of the Faithful, Sayyiduna Ali bin Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him), appeared in front of me; he was looking at the moon. I said: "O Commander of the Faithful, where do you intend to go?" He said: "For some business of mine." I said: "Will you not ride?" He said: "Very well." I moved back onto the rear part of the donkey and said: "O Commander of the Faithful, please ride." He said: "I will not do that. I heard the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) saying: 'The owner of a riding animal has more right to its front part, and the owner of bedding has more right to the prominent part of the bedding.'"
Al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Awsat. Its chain contains a narrator, Yahya bin Kathir Abu al-Nadr, and he is da'if (weak).
