Ibn A'bud says: Sayyiduna Ali bin Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him) said to me: "O Ibn A'bud! Do you know what the right of food is?" I said: "O Ibn Abi Talib! What is its right?" He said: "You say: 'Bismillah, Allahumma barik lana fima razaqtana' (In the name of Allah; O Allah, bless us in what You have provided us)." Then he said: "Do you know what its thanks is when you have finished?" I asked: "What is its thanks?" He said: "You say: 'Al-hamdu lillahi alladhi at'amana wa saqana' (All praise is for Allah who fed us and gave us drink)."
Abdullah bin Ahmad recorded it, and he recorded it as a lengthy narration. About Ibn A'bud, Ibn al-Madini said: "He is not known." The remaining narrators of this report are thiqat (trustworthy).

A woman says: "Watbah" (a particular dish made of dates, ghee and cheese) was brought to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). A Bedouin took it in three morsels, so the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Had he said 'Bismillah', this food would have been ample for you (or would have sufficed you)." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "When one of you forgets to mention the name of Allah over his food, then when he remembers, he should say: 'Bismillahi awwalahu wa akhirahu' (In the name of Allah, at its beginning and at its end)."
Abu Ya'la recorded it, and its narrators are thiqat (trustworthy).

Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Sometimes a man's food is placed before him, and he is forgiven before his food is lifted away." It was said: "O Messenger of Allah! How is that?" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "When the food is placed, he says 'Bismillah', and when it is lifted away, he says 'Al-hamdu lillah'."

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) says: The devil that stays with a Muslim meets the devil that stays with a disbeliever, and the devil that stays with the believer looks pale, dust-covered and emaciated. The devil that stays with the disbeliever asks him: "Woe to you! Why are you being destroyed?" The devil that stays with the believer says: "By Allah! I cannot get at anything with him. When he eats, he mentions the name of Allah; when he drinks, he mentions the name of Allah; and when he enters his house, he mentions the name of Allah." The other devil says: "But as for me, I eat from the food of the person I am with, drink from his drink, and sleep on his bed." So that one is healthy, and this one is emaciated.
Tabarani recorded it as a mawquf (Companion's own statement) narration, and its narrators are the narrators of the Sahih.

Sayyidah Salma (may Allah be pleased with her), the freedwoman of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), says that she prepared khazirah for the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and presented it to him. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) ate it, and some of his Companions were with him. A little of it remained. A Bedouin passed by the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) called him. The Bedouin took all of it in his hand, so the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to him: "Put it down." Then he said: "Mention the name of Allah first and eat from the part nearest to you; you will be satisfied." So he ate his fill from it, and some of it was still left over.

Sayyiduna Abu Ayyub al-Ansari (may Allah be pleased with him) says: One day we were with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and he had food brought. I have never seen food more blessed at the beginning, when we first ate, nor less blessed at the end. We said: "O Messenger of Allah! What is the reason for this?" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The reason is that when we ate (at the beginning), we mentioned the name of Allah. Then afterwards a man came and sat down and ate from it without saying Bismillah, so the devil ate along with him."
Ahmad recorded it. Its chain contains Rashid bin Jandal and Habib bin Aws, each of whom has only one narrator reporting from him. The remaining narrators of its chain are the narrators of the Sahih, except Ibn Lahi'ah, and his hadith is hasan (good).
