Sayyiduna Amr bin Umayyah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) came to him in the market while he was bargaining over a cloak. Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) asked: "O Amr! What is this?" He replied: "It is a cloak which I have bought, and I will give it in charity." Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said to him: "Then do so." Later he came to him again and asked: "O Amr! What became of that cloak?" He replied: "I gave it in charity." Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) asked: "To whom?" He replied: "To (my wife) Sukhaylah bint Ubaydah." Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "Did you not say that you would give it in charity?" Sayyiduna Amr bin Umayyah (may Allah be pleased with him) replied: "Yes! But I heard the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) say: 'Whatever you give to these women (i.e. your wives) will be charity for you.'" The narrator says: Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "O Amr! Do not attribute a lie to the Messenger of Allah." Sayyiduna Amr bin Umayyah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "By Allah! I will not part from you until we go to the Mother of the Believers, Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her)." He said: "O Amr! Do not attribute a lie to the Messenger of Allah." They asked permission to enter upon Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her). Sayyiduna Amr bin Umayyah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "I ask you by Allah: did you hear the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say: 'Whatever you people give to these women (i.e. your wives) is charity for you'?" Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) replied: "O Allah, yes! O Allah, yes!" Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said (addressing himself): "How was I unaware of this? Bargaining in the markets kept me heedless."
Al-Bazzar recorded it. Ahmad recorded from him this narration: "Whatever a man gives to his wife is charity." The chains of both contain Muhammad bin Abi Humayd, who is da'if (weak).

Then Sayyiduna Amr bin Umayyah (may Allah be pleased with him) passed by him, bought the cloak, and gave it to his wife Sukhaylah bint Ubaydah bin al-Harith bin al-Muttalib to wear. Later Sayyiduna Uthman al-Ghani (may Allah be pleased with him) or Sayyiduna Abdul Rahman passed by him and asked: "What became of the cloak you bought?" Sayyiduna Amr bin Umayyah (may Allah be pleased with him) replied: "I heard the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) say this." That man mentioned before the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) what Sayyiduna Amr (may Allah be pleased with him) had said, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Amr spoke the truth. Whatever (good) you do for your wife will be charity upon them."
