Sayyiduna Amr bin Umayyah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: Sayyiduna Uthman bin Affan (may Allah be pleased with him) or perhaps Sayyiduna Abdul Rahman bin Awf (may Allah be pleased with him) (this doubt is from a later narrator) passed by a man with a cloak, and they found the cloak expensive. Then Sayyiduna Amr bin Umayyah (may Allah be pleased with him) passed by him, bought the cloak, and gave it to his wife Sukhaylah bint Ubaydah bin al-Harith bin al-Muttalib to wear. Later Sayyiduna Uthman al-Ghani (may Allah be pleased with him) or Sayyiduna Abdul Rahman passed by him and asked: "What became of the cloak you bought?" Sayyiduna Amr (may Allah be pleased with him) replied: "I have given it in charity to Sukhaylah bint Ubaydah (i.e. my wife)." He asked: "Is whatever you do for your wife charity?" Sayyiduna Amr bin Umayyah (may Allah be pleased with him) replied: "I heard the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) say this." That man mentioned before the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) what Sayyiduna Amr (may Allah be pleased with him) had said, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Amr spoke the truth. Whatever (good) you do for your wife will be charity upon them."
Abu Ya'la and al-Tabarani recorded it. All the narrators of al-Tabarani are thiqat (trustworthy).
