It is reported about Sayyiduna Ubayy bin Ka'b (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: "O Messenger of Allah! What is the recompense for fever?" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "It keeps the good deeds of the one afflicted with it flowing, as long as his foot trembles or his vein throbs against him." Sayyiduna Ubayy said: "O Allah! I ask You for a fever that does not prevent me from going out in Your path (for jihad), or going out to Your House, or to the mosque of Your Prophet." The narrator says: Thereafter he never reached the evening except that he had a fever.
Al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir and al-Mu'jam al-Awsat through Muhammad bin Mu'adh bin Ubayy bin Ka'b from his father. Both of these narrators are majhul (unknown), as Yahya bin Ma'in stated.
(Allamah al-Haythami says:) I say: Ibn Hibban has mentioned both of them in the book al-Thiqat.
(Allamah al-Haythami says:) I say: Two chapters before this, a hadith narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Sa'id al-Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) has already passed (in which the incident of Sayyiduna Ubayy bin Ka'b (may Allah be pleased with him) is mentioned).

Sayyiduna Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: The fever sought permission to come before the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: "Who are you?" It said: "Umm Mildam." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) ordered it to go to the people of Quba'. Those people then suffered from the fever what Allah Almighty knew. Then they came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and complained to him about the fever. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "What do you wish? If you wish, I will pray to Allah Almighty and He will remove it from you; and if you wish, it will become a means of purification for you (that is, of being cleansed of sins)." The people said: "O Messenger of Allah! Will you really do that?" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Yes." They said: "Then leave it (so that it becomes an expiation for our sins)."
Ahmad and Abu Ya'la recorded it. The narrators of Ahmad are the narrators of the Sahih.

Umm Tariq, the freed slave-woman of Sayyiduna Sa'd (may Allah be pleased with him), narrates: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) came to the house of Sayyiduna Sa'd (may Allah be pleased with him) and asked permission to enter, but Sayyiduna Sa'd (may Allah be pleased with him) remained silent. He asked permission again, and Sayyiduna Sa'd (may Allah be pleased with him) again remained silent. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked permission once more, and Sayyiduna Sa'd (may Allah be pleased with him) again remained silent, so the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) turned back. Umm Tariq says: Sayyiduna Sa'd (may Allah be pleased with him) sent me to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) to say that we did not give you permission only because we wanted you to keep giving us more (that is, to keep saying "Assalamu alaykum" more). Umm Tariq says: I heard a voice at the door asking permission to enter, but I could not see anything. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: "Who are you?" It said: "Umm Mildam (that is, fever)." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "You are neither welcome nor greeted. Will you go to the people of Quba'?" It said: "Yes." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Then go to them."

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked it: "Who are you?" It replied: "I am the fever; I wear away (or weaken) the flesh and suck the blood." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Go to the people of Quba'." The fever went to those people. They came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) with their faces turned yellow, and complained to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) about the fever. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Whatever you wish (will be so). If you wish, I will pray to Allah Almighty and He will remove it from you; and if you wish, leave it, and it will wipe out your remaining sins." The people said: "Yes! Leave it, O Messenger of Allah!"
