Sayyiduna Shurahbil (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: We were with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) when a tall Bedouin came to him, shivering (that is, suffering from fever). He said: "O Messenger of Allah! An old, aged man with a fever that is boiling, which will take him to the graves." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "An old, aged man with a fever that is boiling; and this fever will be an expiation and a means of purification for him." The man repeated his words, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) repeated his words to him as well; this exchange happened three or perhaps four times. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "If you will not accept it, then it will be as you say, and whatever Allah Almighty has decreed will surely come to pass." The narrator says: The next day, before evening, that man died.
Al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir. Its chain contains a narrator whom I do not know.
