بَابُ الْإِنْصَاتِ وَالْإِمَامُ يَخْطُبُ .

عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ قَالَ : قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ - صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ - : " مَنْ تَكَلَّمَ يَوْمَ الْجُمُعَةِ وَالْإِمَامُ يَخْطُبُ فَهُوَ كَمَثَلِ الْحِمَارِ يَحْمِلُ أَسْفَارًا ، وَالَّذِي يَقُولُ لَهُ : أَنْصِتْ لَيْسَ لَهُ جُمُعَةٌ " .
رَوَاهُ أَحْمَدُ وَالْبَزَّارُ وَالطَّبَرَانِيُّ فِي الْكَبِيرِ ، وَفِيهِ مُجَالِدُ بْنُ سَعِيدٍ ، وَقَدْ ضَعَّفَهُ النَّاسُ وَوَثَّقَهُ النَّسَائِيُّ فِي رِوَايَةٍ .
رَوَاهُ أَحْمَدُ وَالْبَزَّارُ وَالطَّبَرَانِيُّ فِي الْكَبِيرِ ، وَفِيهِ مُجَالِدُ بْنُ سَعِيدٍ ، وَقَدْ ضَعَّفَهُ النَّاسُ وَوَثَّقَهُ النَّسَائِيُّ فِي رِوَايَةٍ .
Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Whoever talks on Friday while the imam is delivering the sermon is like a donkey carrying a load; and the one who says to him, 'Be quiet,' has no Friday prayer."

وَعَنْ أَبِي الدَّرْدَاءِ قَالَ : جَلَسَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ - صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ - يَوْمًا عَلَى الْمِنْبَرِ فَخَطَبَ النَّاسَ وَتَلَا آيَةً ، وَإِلَى جَنْبِي أُبَيُّ بْنُ كَعْبٍ فَقُلْتُ لَهُ : يَا أُبَيُّ مَتَى أُنْزِلَتْ هَذِهِ الْآيَةُ ؟ قَالَ : فَأَبَى أَنْ يُكَلِّمَنِي ثُمَّ سَأَلْتُهُ فَأَبَى أَنْ يُكَلِّمَنِي حَتَّى نَزَلَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ - صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ - فَقَالَ أُبَيٌّ : مَا لَكَ مِنْ جُمُعَتِكَ إِلَّا مَا لَغَيْتَ فَلَمَّا انْصَرَفَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ - صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ - جِئْتُهُ فَأَخْبَرْتُهُ فَقُلْتُ : أَيْ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ؛ إِنَّكَ تَلَوْتَ آيَةً وَإِلَى جَنْبِي أُبَيُّ بْنُ كَعْبٍ فَقُلْتُ لَهُ : مَتَى أُنْزِلَتْ هَذِهِ الْآيَةُ فَأَبَى أَنْ يُكَلِّمَنِي حَتَّى إِذَا نَزَلْتَ زَعَمَ أُبَيٌّ أَنَّهُ لَيْسَ لِي مِنْ جُمُعَتِي إِلَّا مَا لَغَيْتَ فَقَالَ : " صَدَقَ أُبِيٌّ إِذَا سَمِعْتَ إِمَامَكَ يَتَكَلَّمُ فَأَنْصِتْ حَتَّى يَفْرُغَ " .
رَوَاهُ أَحْمَدُ وَالطَّبَرَانِيُّ فِي الْكَبِيرِ وَرِجَالُ أَحْمَدَ مُوَثَّقُونَ .

Sayyiduna Abu al-Darda' (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: One day the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was seated on the pulpit delivering a sermon to the people, and he recited a verse. Sayyiduna Ubayy bin Ka'b was beside me, and I said to him: "O Sayyiduna Ubayy, when was this verse revealed?" But he did not speak to me. Then I asked him again, and again he did not speak to me, until, when the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) came down from the pulpit, Sayyiduna Ubayy said: "The only share you have from this Friday of yours is your idle talk." When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) had finished the prayer, I went to him and told him. I said: "O Messenger of Allah! You recited a verse, and Sayyiduna Ubayy bin Ka'b was beside me. I asked him when this verse was revealed, but he did not talk to me, until, when you came down from the pulpit, Sayyiduna Ubayy claimed that my only share from this Friday is the idle talk I engaged in." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Ubayy spoke the truth. When you hear your imam speaking, remain silent until he finishes."

وَعَنْ جَابِرٍ قَالَ : قَالَ سَعْدُ بْنُ أَبِي وَقَّاصٍ لِرَجُلٍ : لَا جُمُعَةَ لَكَ فَقَالَ النَّبِيُّ - صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ - : " لِمَ يَا سَعْدُ ؟ " قَالَ : لِأَنَّهُ كَانَ يَتَكَلَّمُ وَأَنْتَ تَخْطُبُ فَقَالَ النَّبِيُّ - صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ - : " صَدَقَ سَعْدٌ " .

Sayyiduna Jabir narrates: Sayyiduna Sa'd bin Abi Waqqas said to a man: "Your Friday prayer did not count." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: "Why is that, O Sa'd?" He replied: "Because he talked during your sermon." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Sa'd spoke the truth."

وَعَنْ جَابِرٍ قَالَ : دَخَلَ عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ مَسْعُودٍ الْمَسْجِدَ وَالنَّبِيُّ - صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ - يَخْطُبُ فَجَلَسَ إِلَى جَنْبِهِ أُبَيُّ بْنُ كَعْبٍ فَسَأَلَهُ عَنْ شَيْءٍ أَوْ كَلَّمَهُ بِشَيْءٍ فَلَمْ يَرُدَّ عَلَيْهِ [ أُبَيٌّ ] ، فَظَنَّ ابْنُ مَسْعُودٍ أَنَّهَا مَوْجِدَةٌ ، فَلَمَّا انْفَتَلَ النَّبِيُّ - صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ - مِنْ صَلَاتِهِ قَالَ ابْنُ مَسْعُودٍ : يَا أُبَيُّ مَا مَنَعَكَ أَنْ تَرُدَّ عَلَيَّ ؟ قَالَ : إِنَّكَ لَمْ تَحْضُرْ مَعَنَا الْجُمُعَةَ قَالَ : وَلِمَ ؟ قَالَ : تَكَلَّمْتَ وَالنَّبِيُّ - صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ - يَخْطُبُ فَقَامَ ابْنُ مَسْعُودٍ فَدَخَلَ عَلَى النَّبِيِّ - صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ - فَذَكَرَ ذَلِكَ لَهُ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ - صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ - : " صَدَقَ أُبَيٌّ ، أَطِعْ أُبَيًّا " .

Sayyiduna Jabir narrates: Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) entered the mosque while the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was delivering the sermon. He sat down beside Sayyiduna Ubayy bin Ka'b and asked him about something, or spoke to him about something, but Sayyiduna Ubayy did not answer him. Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) thought that perhaps he was upset with him. When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) had finished the prayer, Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "O Sayyiduna Ubayy, why did you not answer me?" He said: "Because you did not take part in the Friday prayer with us." Sayyiduna Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) asked: "Why is that?" Sayyiduna Ubayy said: "Because you spoke while the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was delivering the sermon." Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) got up, went to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and mentioned this to him. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Ubayy spoke the truth; obey Ubayy."

وَعَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ قَالَ : خَطَبَنَا النَّبِيُّ - صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ - يَوْمَ جُمُعَةٍ فَذَكَرَ سُورَةً فَقَالَ أَبُو ذَرٍّ لِأُبَيٍّ : مَتَى أُنْزِلَتْ هَذِهِ السُّورَةُ ؟ فَأَعْرَضَ عَنْهُ فَلَمَّا انْصَرَفَ قَالَ : مَا لَكَ مِنْ صَلَاتِكَ إِلَّا مَا لَغَيْتَ ، فَسَأَلَ النَّبِيَّ - صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ - فَقَالَ : "صَدَقَ " .

Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: On a Friday, while delivering the sermon to us, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) mentioned a surah. Sayyiduna Abu Dharr al-Ghifari said to Sayyiduna Ubayy: "When was this surah revealed?" Sayyiduna Ubayy turned away from him. When the prayer was over, Sayyiduna Ubayy said: "Your only share from this prayer of yours is your idle talk." Sayyiduna Abu Dharr al-Ghifari asked the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) about this, and he said: "He spoke the truth."

وَعَنْ سَمُرَةَ أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ - صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ - قَالَ : " إِذَا أَتَيْتُمُ الْجُمُعَةَ فَادْنُوا مِنَ الْإِمَامِ وَاسْتَمِعُوا الْخُطْبَةَ وَلَا تَلْغُوا " .
قُلْتُ : رَوَى أَبُو دَاوُدَ مِنْهُ طَرَفًا .
رَوَاهُ الْبَزَّارُ ، وَفِيهِ الْحَكَمُ بْنُ عَبْدِ الْمَلِكِ ، وَهُوَ ضَعِيفٌ .

Sayyiduna Samurah reports that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "When you come to the Friday prayer, stay close to the imam, listen attentively to the sermon, and do not engage in idle talk." (Allamah al-Haythami says:) I say: Abu Dawud narrated part of this narration.

وَعَنْ أَبِي الدَّرْدَاءِ قَالَ : كَانَ النَّبِيُّ - صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ - يَخْطُبُ يَوْمَ الْجُمُعَةِ فَذَكَّرَنَا بِأَيَّامِ اللَّهِ ، ثُمَّ قَرَأَ سُورَةً فَغَمَزَ أَبُو الدَّرْدَاءِ أُبَيَّ بْنَ كَعْبٍ فَقَالَ : مَتَى أُنْزِلَتْ هَذِهِ السُّورَةُ فَإِنِّي لَمْ أَسْمَعْهَا إِلَّا الْآنَ ؟ فَأَشَارَ إِلَيْهِ أَنِ اسْكُتْ ، فَلَمَّا انْصَرَفُوا قَالَ أُبَيٌّ : لَيْسَ لَكَ مِنْ صَلَاتِكَ إِلَّا مَا لَغَوْتَ ، فَأَخْبَرَ أَبُو الدَّرْدَاءِ النَّبِيَّ - صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ - بِمَا قَالَ أُبَيٌّ فَقَالَ : " صَدَقَ أُبَيٌّ " .
Sayyiduna Abu al-Darda' (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: On Friday, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was delivering the sermon, admonishing and exhorting us; then he recited a surah. Sayyiduna Abu al-Darda' nudged Sayyiduna Ubayy bin Ka'b (may Allah be pleased with him) and asked: "When was this surah revealed? I have only heard it just now." Sayyiduna Ubayy signalled to him to keep quiet. When the people had finished the prayer, Sayyiduna Ubayy said: "Your only share from this prayer of yours is your idle talk." Sayyiduna Abu al-Darda' told the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) what Sayyiduna Ubayy had said, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Ubayy spoke the truth."
وَعَنْ أَبِي الدَّرْدَاءِ وَأَبِي ذَرٍّ قَالَا : قَرَأَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ - صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ - يَوْمَ الْجُمُعَةِ عَلَى الْمِنْبَرِ ، قَالَ : فَذَكَرَ الْحَدِيثَ .
قُلْتُ : حَدِيثُ أَبِي الدَّرْدَاءِ الَّذِي قَبْلَ هَذَا تَقَدَّمَ أَنَّ الْإِمَامَ أَحْمَدَ رَوَاهُ هُوَ وَالطَّبَرَانِيُّ ، وَلَكِنَّ الطَّبَرَانِيَّ رَوَى هَذَا عَنْ أَبِي الدَّرْدَاءِ وَذَكَرَ بَعْدَهُ إِسْنَادًا إِلَى أَبِي الدَّرْدَاءِ وَأَبِي ذَرٍّ قَالَ : فَذَكَرَ الْحَدِيثَ ، وَإِسْنَادُهُمَا رِجَالُهُ رِجَالُ الصَّحِيحِ .
وَقَدْ تَقَدَّمَ أَحَادِيثُ فِي حُقُوقِ الْجُمُعَةِ وَالتَّبْكِيرِ فِيهَا وَالْإِنْصَاتِ لَهَا .
قُلْتُ : حَدِيثُ أَبِي الدَّرْدَاءِ الَّذِي قَبْلَ هَذَا تَقَدَّمَ أَنَّ الْإِمَامَ أَحْمَدَ رَوَاهُ هُوَ وَالطَّبَرَانِيُّ ، وَلَكِنَّ الطَّبَرَانِيَّ رَوَى هَذَا عَنْ أَبِي الدَّرْدَاءِ وَذَكَرَ بَعْدَهُ إِسْنَادًا إِلَى أَبِي الدَّرْدَاءِ وَأَبِي ذَرٍّ قَالَ : فَذَكَرَ الْحَدِيثَ ، وَإِسْنَادُهُمَا رِجَالُهُ رِجَالُ الصَّحِيحِ .
وَقَدْ تَقَدَّمَ أَحَادِيثُ فِي حُقُوقِ الْجُمُعَةِ وَالتَّبْكِيرِ فِيهَا وَالْإِنْصَاتِ لَهَا .
Sayyiduna Abu al-Darda' (may Allah be pleased with him) and Sayyiduna Abu Dharr al-Ghifari (may Allah be pleased with him) narrate: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) recited on the pulpit on Friday. The narrator says: He then mentioned the hadith as before. (Allamah al-Haythami says:) I say: The hadith of Sayyiduna Abu al-Darda' that came before this, which Ahmad recorded and al-Tabarani recorded; but al-Tabarani narrated it from Sayyiduna Abu al-Darda', and after it he mentioned a chain up to Sayyiduna Abu al-Darda' and Sayyiduna Abu Dharr al-Ghifari, after which he mentioned the full hadith; and the narrators of the chains of both narrations are the narrators of the Sahih. Hadiths about the rights of Friday, going early to it and keeping silent during it have already passed earlier.
وَعَنْ أَبِي سَعِيدٍ الْخُدْرِيِّ عَنِ النَّبِيِّ - صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ - أَنَّهُ قَالَ : " مَا مِنْ أَحَدٍ يَشْهَدُ الْجُمُعَةَ لَا يَلْغُو فِيهَا وَلَا يَجْهَلُ وَيُحْسِنُ الْوُضُوءَ وَيَشْهَدُهَا مَعَ الْإِمَامِ إِلَّا كَانَتْ كَفَّارَةً مَا بَيْنَهَا وَبَيْنَ الْجُمُعَةِ الَّتِي تَلِيهَا، وَلَا صَلَّى صَلَاةً مَكْتُوبَةً إِلَّا كَانَتْ كَفَّارَةً لِمَا بَيْنَهَا وَبَيْنَ الصَّلَاةِ الَّتِي تَلِيهَا " .

Sayyiduna Abu Sa'id al-Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) reports that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Whoever attends the Friday prayer, does not engage in idle talk in it, does not behave ignorantly, performs ablution well and attends it with the imam, it will be an expiation for (his sins) between that Friday and the Friday after it. And whoever offers an obligatory prayer, it becomes an expiation for (the sins) between that prayer and the prayer after it."

وَعَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ قَالَ : يُكْرَهُ الْكَلَامُ فِي أَرْبَعَةِ مَوَاطِنَ : يَوْمِ الْجُمُعَةِ وَيَوْمِ الْفِطْرِ وَيَوْمِ الْأَضْحَى وَفِي الِاسْتِسْقَاءِ [ إِذَا صَعِدَ الْإِمَامُ الْمِنْبَرَ ] ، فَتَكَلَّمَ حَتَّى نَزَلَ .
رَوَاهُ الطَّبَرَانِيُّ فِي الْكَبِيرِ وَفِيهِ يَحْيَى بْنُ سَلَمَةَ بْنِ كُهَيْلٍ ضَعَّفَهُ الْبُخَارِيُّ وَالنَّسَائِيُّ وَالتِّرْمِذِيُّ وَابْنُ مَعِينٍ وَوَثَّقَهُ ابْنُ حِبَّانَ .

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates: Talking has been declared disliked on four occasions: on Friday, on the day of Eid al-Fitr, on the day of Eid al-Adha, and in the prayer for rain (istisqa'), once the imam has taken his place on the pulpit and begun speaking, until he comes down from the pulpit.
Al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir; its chain contains Yahya bin Salamah bin Kuhayl, whom Bukhari (may Allah have mercy on him), al-Nasa'i (may Allah have mercy on him), al-Tirmidhi and Yahya bin Ma'in declared da'if (weak), while Ibn Hibban declared him thiqah (trustworthy).

وَعَنْ أَبِي قَيْسٍ قَالَ : دَخَلَ عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ مَسْعُودٍ يَوْمَ الْجُمُعَةِ الْمَسْجِدَ وَعَلَيْهِ ثِيَابٌ بِيضٌ نِقَاءٌ حِسَانٌ فَنَظَرَ إِلَى مَكَانٍ فِيهِ سَعَةٌ ، فَجَلَسَ فِيهِ وَلَمْ يَتَخَطَّ أَحَدًا ، وَخَرَجَ الْإِمَامُ فَإِذَا رَجُلَانِ يَتَكَلَّمَانِ ، فَأَخَذَ مِنَ الْحَصَى فَرَمَاهُمَا فَنَظَرَا إِلَيْهِ فَسَكَتَا فَلَمَّا نَزَلَ الْإِمَامُ قَالَ : أَلَمْ تَعْلَمَا أَنَّكُمَا فِي صَلَاةٍ ؟ ! .

Abu Qays narrates: Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) entered the mosque on Friday wearing clean, fine white clothes. He looked at a place where there was room and sat down there; he did not step over anyone's neck. Then the imam came out, and at that moment two men were talking. He picked up some pebbles and threw them at the two of them. They looked at Sayyiduna Abdullah and fell silent. When the imam came down from the pulpit, Sayyiduna Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "Do you two not know that you were in a state of prayer?"

وَعَنْ إِبْرَاهِيمَ - يَعْنِي النَّخَعِيَّ - قَالَ : اسْتَقْرَأَ رَجُلٌ عَبْدَ اللَّهِ بْنَ مَسْعُودٍ وَالْإِمَامُ يَخْطُبُ يَوْمَ الْجُمُعَةِ فَلَمْ يُكَلِّمْهُ عَبْدُ اللَّهِ فَلَمَّا قَضَى الصَّلَاةَ قَالَ لَهُ عَبْدُ اللَّهِ : الَّذِي سَأَلْتَ عَنْهُ نَصِيبُكَ مِنَ الْجُمُعَةِ .

Ibrahim al-Nakha'i narrates: A man asked Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) about a verse of the Qur'an while the imam was delivering the sermon on Friday. Sayyiduna Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) did not talk to him. When the prayer was over, Sayyiduna Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) said to him: "What you asked about is your share from the Friday prayer."

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) says: It is enough to count as idle talk that, on Friday, once the imam has come out, you say to your companion: "Be quiet!"
