Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates this saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): "Whoever only performs ablution (wudu) on Friday, that is sufficient and good; but whoever takes a ritual bath (ghusl), the ritual bath is more virtuous."
Imam al-Bazzar recorded this narration. Its chain contains a narrator, Yazid al-Raqashi, about whom there has been criticism.

Imam al-Tabarani recorded this narration in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir. Its chain contains a narrator, Muhammad bin Mu'awiyah al-Naysaburi, and he is da'if (weak), although Imam Ahmad praised him. Amr bin Ali said: He is da'if (weak), but he is saduq (truthful).

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was delivering the sermon on Friday. Meanwhile a man entered (the mosque) and came forward stepping over the necks of the people. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "One of you comes late, then steps over the necks of the people and causes them harm." The man said: As soon as I heard the call to prayer (adhan), I did nothing else except perform ablution (and came). The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Is it a day for only ablution?"
Imam al-Tabarani recorded this narration in al-Mu'jam al-Awsat. Its chain contains a narrator, Amr bin al-Walid al-Sahmi. Imam al-Nasa'i (may Allah have mercy on him) said: He is not strong. Imam Ibn Hibban (may Allah have mercy on him) mentioned him in the book "al-Thiqat", and the rest of the narrators of this narration are thiqat (trustworthy).

Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Taking a ritual bath on Friday has been deemed recommended (mustahabb); it is not compulsory.
Imam al-Tabarani recorded this narration in al-Mu'jam al-Awsat, and its narrators are thiqat (trustworthy). (Allamah al-Haythami says:) I say: In the chapter before this one, a narration has already passed which indicates that taking a ritual bath on Friday is Sunnah. And Allah knows best.
