The bathhouse and depilatory paste

The judge of the armies in Constantinople narrates: Sayyiduna Umar bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) said: O people! I heard the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) say: "Whoever believes in Allah Almighty and the Last Day must never sit at a dining spread around which wine is passed; whoever believes in Allah Almighty and the Last Day should not enter the bathhouse (hammam) without a waist-wrapper; and whoever believes in Allah Almighty and the Last Day should not let his wife go to the bathhouse."
Imam Ahmad recorded it; its chain contains a narrator who is not named.

Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Whoever believes in Allah Almighty and the Last Day, from among the men of my Ummah, should not enter the bathhouse (hammam) without a waist-wrapper; and whoever believes in Allah Almighty and the Last Day should not let his wife go to the bathhouse."
Imam Ahmad recorded it; its chain contains a narrator, Abu Khayrah. Imam al-Dhahabi says: He is not known.

Sayyidah Umm al-Darda' (may Allah be pleased with her) narrates: I came out of the bathhouse (hammam) and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) met me. He asked: "O Umm al-Darda'! Where are you coming from?" I replied: "From the bathhouse." He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "By the One in whose Hand is my soul! Any woman who takes off her clothes anywhere other than the house of one of her mothers tears apart every veil that lies between her and the Most Merciful."
Imam Ahmad and Imam al-Tabarani in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir recorded it with various chains, and the narrators of one of them are the narrators of the "Sahih".

Sa'ib, the freed slave of Sayyidah Umm Salamah (may Allah be pleased with her), narrates: Some women came to Sayyidah Umm Salamah (may Allah be pleased with her); those women were from Hims. Sayyidah Umm Salamah (may Allah be pleased with her) asked them: "Where are you from?" They replied: "From the people of Hims." Sayyidah Umm Salamah (may Allah be pleased with her) said: I heard the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) say: "Any woman who takes off her clothes anywhere other than her own house, Allah Almighty tears away her veil."
Imam Ahmad, Imam al-Tabarani in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir, and Imam Abu Ya'la recorded it; its chain contains a narrator, Ibn Lahi'ah, who is da'if (weak).

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Beware of a house that will be called the hammam (bathhouse)." The people said: "O Messenger of Allah! It removes dirt." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Then cover yourselves (that is, enter it with your private parts covered)."
Imam al-Bazzar recorded it, and Imam al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir, except that he reported these words: "The people said: O Messenger of Allah! It removes dirt and benefits the sick." The narrators of the report recorded by Imam al-Bazzar are the narrators of the "Sahih", although Imam al-Bazzar said: People have narrated it from Tawus as a "mursal" report.

Sayyiduna Abu Sa'id al-Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Whoever believes in Allah Almighty and the Last Day should not enter the bathhouse (hammam) without a waist-wrapper; whoever believes in Allah Almighty and the Last Day should not let his wife go to the bathhouse; and whoever believes in Allah Almighty and the Last Day should hasten to the Friday prayer. Whoever makes himself independent of it (that is, of the Friday prayer) because of some amusement or trade, Allah Almighty will be independent of him, and Allah Almighty is Free of need, Praiseworthy."
Imam al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Awsat, and Imam al-Bazzar recorded it in abridged form, mentioning only the Friday prayer. The chain of this report contains a narrator, Ali bin Yazid al-Alhani, whom Abu Hatim and Ibn Adi declared "da'if" (weak), while Imam Ahmad and Ibn Hibban declared him "thiqah" (trustworthy).

Sayyiduna Abu Ayyub al-Ansari (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Whoever believes in Allah Almighty and the Last Day should honour his guest; whoever believes in Allah Almighty and the Last Day should honour his neighbour; whoever believes in Allah Almighty and the Last Day should not enter the bathhouse (hammam) without a waist-wrapper; and whoever among your women believes in Allah Almighty and the Last Day should not enter the bathhouse."
Imam al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir and al-Mu'jam al-Awsat; its chain contains a narrator, Abdullah bin Salih, the scribe of al-Layth, whom Imam Ahmad and others declared "da'if" (weak). Abd al-Malik bin Shu'ayb bin al-Layth says: He is thiqah (trustworthy) and ma'mun (reliable).

Sayyidah Aishah al-Siddiqah (may Allah be pleased with her) narrates that she asked the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) about the bathhouse (hammam). He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "After me there will soon be bathhouses, but there is no good in bathhouses for women." Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) said: "O Messenger of Allah! May a woman enter it wearing a waist-wrapper?" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "No! She may not enter it even with a waist-wrapper, a shift and a head-covering. Any woman who removes her head-covering anywhere other than her husband's house removes the veil that lies between her and her Lord." (Allamah al-Haythami says:) I say:

Imam al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Awsat; its chain contains a narrator, Ibn Lahi'ah, who is da'if (weak).

Sayyiduna al-Miqdam bin Ma'dikarib (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Soon you will conquer distant lands. There will be houses there that will be called hammams (bathhouses). Entering them is forbidden for my Ummah." The people said: "O Messenger of Allah! It removes fatigue and cleans away dirt." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "It will be lawful for the men of my Ummah, provided they are wearing waist-wrappers, but it will be forbidden for the women of my Ummah."
Imam al-Tabarani recorded it; its chain contains a narrator, Maslamah bin Ali al-Khushani, on whose weakness the hadith scholars are agreed.

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The worst house is the bathhouse (hammam): voices are raised in it, and private parts are uncovered." A man said: "O Messenger of Allah! It brings relief to the sick and removes dirt." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Whoever enters it should not enter it without being covered."
Imam al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir; its chain contains a narrator, Yahya bin Uthman al-Samti, whom Imam al-Bukhari (may Allah have mercy on him) and Imam al-Nasa'i (may Allah have mercy on him) declared "da'if" (weak), while Abu Hatim and Ibn Hibban declared him "thiqah" (trustworthy). The remaining narrators of this report are the narrators of the "Sahih".

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) reports this saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): "Do not enter the bathhouse (hammam) without a waist-wrapper. Whoever believes in Allah Almighty and the Last Day should not let his wife go to the bathhouse; whoever believes in Allah Almighty and the Last Day should not drink wine; whoever believes in Allah Almighty and the Last Day should not sit at a dining spread at which wine is drunk; and whoever believes in Allah Almighty and the Last Day should not be alone in privacy with a woman when there is no mahram (of hers) present between him and her."
Imam al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir; its chain contains a narrator, Yahya bin Abi Sulayman al-Madani, whom Imam al-Bukhari (may Allah have mercy on him) and Abu Hatim declared "da'if" (weak), while Ibn Hibban declared him "thiqah" (trustworthy).

Sayyiduna Abu Musa al-Ash'ari (may Allah be pleased with him) reports this saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): "The first for whom depilatory paste (nurah) was prepared, and the first to enter the bathhouses, was Sayyiduna Sulayman (peace be upon him). When he entered it, he felt its heat and its oppressiveness, and he said: 'Alas! (Refuge) from the punishment of Allah Almighty! Alas, alas, before it is of no avail! Alas, alas, alas!'"
Imam al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir and al-Mu'jam al-Awsat; its chain contains a narrator, Isma'il al-Awdi, who is da'if (weak).

Sayyiduna Abu Rafi' (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: Once the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) passed by a place, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "This is a fine place for a bathhouse (hammam)." The narrator says: So a bathhouse was built at that place.
Imam al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir; its chain contains a narrator, Yahya bin Ya'la, who is da'if (weak).

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Whoever believes in Allah Almighty and the Last Day should not enter the bathhouse (hammam) without a waist-wrapper."
Imam al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Awsat; its chain contains a narrator, Habib, the scribe of Imam Malik, who is da'if (weak).

It is reported about Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both): "He entered the bathhouse (hammam), and the owner of the bathhouse applied depilatory paste (nurah) to him. When he reached the place where the waist-wrapper is tied, he said to the owner of the bathhouse: Leave!"
Imam al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir, and its narrators are the narrators of the "Sahih".

Sukayn bin Abd al-Aziz reports from his father: I came to Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) while a slave girl was shaving his hair. He said: "Depilatory paste (nurah) damages the skin."
Imam al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir, and its narrators have been declared trustworthy.
