Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "No one shall touch the Qur'an except one who is pure."
Imam al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir and al-Mu'jam al-Saghir, and its narrators have been declared trustworthy.

Sayyiduna Hakim bin Hizam (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) sent me to Yemen, he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Touch the Qur'an only when you are pure."
Imam al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir and al-Mu'jam al-Awsat; its chain contains a narrator, Suwayd Abu Hatim, whom Imam al-Nasa'i (may Allah have mercy on him), and Yahya bin Ma'in in one report, declared "da'if" (weak); according to another report he declared him "thiqah" (trustworthy). Abu Zur'ah says: He is not strong; his hadith is the hadith of truthful people.

Sayyiduna al-Mughirah bin Shu'bah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: Sayyiduna Uthman bin Abi al-As (may Allah be pleased with him) related that when he was a young man, he came with a delegation to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). He says: My companions found that I was the most excellent of them all in retaining the Qur'an, and I also had excellence over them in (having memorised) Surah al-Baqarah. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "I appoint you as the leader of your companions, even though you are the youngest of them in age. Touch the Qur'an only when you are pure." (Allamah al-Haythami says:) I say:
Imam al-Tabarani recorded this as part of a long hadith about the cases in which zakah is obligatory; its chain contains a narrator, Isma'il bin Rafi', whom Yahya bin Ma'in and Imam al-Nasa'i (may Allah have mercy on him) declared "da'if" (weak). Imam al-Bukhari (may Allah have mercy on him) says: He is thiqah (trustworthy), but muqarib al-hadith (his hadith is passable).
