Sayyiduna Ali bin Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him) and Sayyiduna Abu Musa al-Ash'ari (may Allah be pleased with him) narrate: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Do not recite the Qur'an while you are in a state of major ritual impurity (janabah)." I asked Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him): The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) would recite the Qur'an in every state, except when in janabah?
Imam al-Bazzar recorded it; the chains of both contain a narrator, Abu Malik al-Nakha'i, on whose weakness the hadith scholars are agreed.

Hadith Takhrij«
Imam Abu Ya'la recorded this report from Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him). He says: I saw the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) perform ablution (wudu) and then recite part of the Qur'an. Then he said: "This is for one who is not in a state of major ritual impurity (janabah). As for one in janabah, then no, not even a single verse."
Its narrators have been declared trustworthy.

Sayyiduna Alqamah bin al-Fagwa' (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) urinated, we would speak to him (that is, say something to him), but he would not speak to us; we would greet him with salam, but he would not return our greeting, until he went to his house and performed ablution like the ablution for prayer. We said: "O Messenger of Allah! We spoke to you but you did not speak to us, and we greeted you with salam but you did not reply to us." The narrator says: Until the verse of concession was revealed: "O you who believe! When you stand up for prayer"
Imam al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir; the chain of this report contains a narrator, Jabir al-Ju'fi, who is da'if (weak).

Ibrahim al-Nakha'i narrates: Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) was teaching a man to recite the Qur'an. When he reached the bank of the river Euphrates, he urinated there, and the man drew back from him. Sayyiduna Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) asked: "What is the matter with you?" He said: "Your ablution has been broken." Sayyiduna Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "Begin reciting!" So he began reciting, and Sayyiduna Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) would prompt him (when he faltered).
Imam al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir, and its narrators are thiqat (trustworthy).
