Sayyiduna Itban (may Allah be pleased with him), or, as the narrator doubts, perhaps Sayyiduna Ibn Itban al-Ansari (may Allah be pleased with him), narrates: I said: "O Messenger of Allah, I was with my wife, and when I heard your voice I withdrew and took a ritual bath." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Water (the bath) is only required because of water (ejaculation)."
Ahmad recorded it, and its chain is hasan (good).

Sayyiduna Rafi' bin Khadij (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) called me out loud while I was having intercourse with my wife, and I had not yet ejaculated. I got up and took a ritual bath. (Later) I told him (peace and blessings be upon him) that when he called me I was having intercourse with my wife and had not yet ejaculated, and that I had taken a ritual bath. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "That was not obligatory on you; water (the bath) is required because of water (ejaculation)."
Ahmad, and al-Tabarani in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir, recorded it; its chain contains Rishdin bin Sa'd, who is da'if (weak).

Sayyiduna Abd al-Rahman bin Awf (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) set out in search of a man from the Ansar and called him. The Ansari came out with water dripping from his head. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "What is the matter with your head?" He said: "You called me while I was with my wife, and I feared that I would keep you waiting, so I hurried: I got up, poured water over myself, and then came out." He said: "Had you ejaculated?" He said: "No." He said: "When you do that, do not take a ritual bath (ghusl); wash whatever of you touched the woman, and perform your ablution as for prayer, for water (the bath) is only required because of water (ejaculation)."
Abu Ya'la and al-Bazzar recorded it by way of Zayd bin Sa'd from Abu Salamah bin Abd al-Rahman bin Awf from his father; Abu Salamah did not hear from his father, and as for Zayd, I have not found anyone who has written a biography of him.

He said: "What held you back?" He said: "When your messenger came to me, I was with my wife, so I got up and took a ritual bath (ghusl)."
Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) came to the door of a man from the Ansar and gave the greeting of peace. The man was at that time with his wife, and he returned the greeting while he was with her. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) greeted a second time, and the man returned the greeting but did not get up. When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was not given permission to enter, he (peace and blessings be upon him) went back. The man got up before he had finished and came after the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), looking for him. Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: We came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) while he was standing, and we gathered around him. The man had taken a bath in a stream beside his house, and when he came he had already bathed. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "He has taken a ritual bath (ghusl), although a bath had not become obligatory on him." The man came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) to apologise and told him about his situation, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "You took a ritual bath, although a bath was not obligatory on you."
Al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Awsat. Al-Bazzar recorded these words from Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him): "When one of you has intercourse with his wife and does not ejaculate, there is no ritual bath." The narrators of al-Bazzar are the narrators of the "Sahih", and the narrators of al-Tabarani have been declared trustworthy, except for al-Tabarani's teacher Muhammad bin Shu'ayb, whom I do not know.

Sayyiduna Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) called a man from the Ansar, and he was slow in coming. Then he came out and mentioned something (that is, the reason for his delay), and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "When a person has not ejaculated, there is no ritual bath (required) of him"; here the narrator is in doubt about one word.
Al-Bazzar recorded it; its narrators are thiqat (trustworthy), except for Abu Isra'il al-Mula'i, who is da'if (weak) because of his poor memory, though some have declared him thiqah (trustworthy).

Ubayd bin Rifa'ah narrates this statement of his father: In the blessed time of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) we used to do this: when we did not ejaculate, we did not take a ritual bath (ghusl).
Al-Bazzar, and al-Tabarani in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir, recorded it; its narrators are the narrators of the "Sahih", except for Ibn Ishaq, who is thiqah (trustworthy) but practises tadlis (concealing defects in the chain).

From a son of Sayyiduna Rafi' bin Khadij (may Allah be pleased with him), this statement of Sayyiduna Rafi' bin Khadij (may Allah be pleased with him) is narrated: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) called me while I was with my wife. I got up, and I had not yet ejaculated; I took a ritual bath (ghusl) and came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). I told him that when he called me I was with my wife, that I got up before I had ejaculated, and that I took a ritual bath. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "There would have been no sin on you, for water (the bath) is required because of water (ejaculation)." Sayyiduna Rafi' (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Later the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) ordered us to take a ritual bath in such a situation.
Ahmad, and al-Tabarani in al-Mu'jam al-Awsat, recorded it; he (al-Tabarani) said: It is narrated from Sahl bin Rafi' from his father. Its chain contains Rishdin bin Sa'd, who has a poor memory.

Sayyiduna Rifa'ah bin Rafi' (may Allah be pleased with him), who had the honour of taking part in the Pledge of Aqabah and the Battle of Badr, narrates: I was with Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) when he was told that Sayyiduna Zayd bin Thabit (may Allah be pleased with him) was giving the people a fatwa in the mosque, based on his own opinion, that a person who has intercourse and does not ejaculate is not required to take a ritual bath (ghusl). Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "Bring him to me quickly." He was brought, and Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "O enemy of yourself! I have learned that you give the people fatwas in the mosque of the Messenger of Allah based on your own opinion?" He said: "I have not done so; rather, my paternal uncles narrated a hadith to me from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)." Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) asked: "Which of your paternal uncles?" He replied: "Sayyiduna Ubayy bin Ka'b (may Allah be pleased with him), Sayyiduna Abu Ayyub al-Ansari (may Allah be pleased with him) and Sayyiduna Rifa'ah bin Rafi' (may Allah be pleased with him)." Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) turned to me and said: "What is this boy saying?" I said: "In the blessed time of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) we used to do that." Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) asked: "Did you ask the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) about it?" Sayyiduna Rifa'ah (may Allah be pleased with him) said only: "In the blessed time of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) we used to do this." The narrator said: Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) gathered the people, and the people agreed that the ritual bath is required only by the emission of semen, except for Sayyiduna Ali bin Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him) and Sayyiduna Mu'adh bin Jabal (may Allah be pleased with him); these two said: "When the private part passes the private part, the ritual bath becomes obligatory." The narrator said: Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "O Commander of the Believers, the ones with the most knowledge of this matter will be the wives of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)." Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) sent a message to Sayyidah Hafsah (may Allah be pleased with her), and she said: "I have no knowledge of this." Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) sent a message to Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her), and she said: "When the private part passes the private part, the ritual bath becomes obligatory." Then Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) showed his anger and said: "If I now learn that anyone has done this, I will punish him."
Ahmad, and al-Tabarani in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir, recorded it. The narrators of Ahmad are thiqat (trustworthy), except that the narrator Ibn Ishaq is a mudallis (one who conceals defects in the chain), though otherwise he is thiqah. Part of this report is narrated in the "Sahih". Al-Tabarani recorded these words in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir: Then they began to discuss coitus interruptus ('azl), and they said that there is no harm in it. A man spoke something in a whisper to his companion, and he (Umar) asked: "What is this whispering about?" One of the two said: "He is saying that this is a lesser form of burying alive." Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "It cannot be burying alive until it has passed through seven stages. Allah Almighty has said: 'And We created man from an extract of clay; then We placed him as a drop of fluid in a firm resting place,' up to: 'So blessed is Allah, the best of creators.'" The narrator said: So all the people dispersed convinced of the verdict of Sayyiduna Ali bin Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him), that there is no harm in it (that is, in coitus interruptus).

Abd al-Rahman bin A'idh narrates: A man asked Sayyiduna Mu'adh bin Jabal (may Allah be pleased with him): What, in intercourse, makes the ritual bath (ghusl) obligatory? What is the ruling on praying in a single garment? And to what extent is contact with a menstruating woman permissible? Sayyiduna Mu'adh (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I asked the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) about this, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "When the private part passes the private part, the ritual bath becomes obligatory. As for praying in a single garment, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) wrapped it around himself crosswise (tawshih) and prayed. As for intimacy with a menstruating woman, contact with what is above the waist-wrapper is permissible, but keeping away even from that is more virtuous."
Al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir. Abu Dawud recorded the part about the menstruating woman; among Abu Dawud's narrators is Baqiyyah bin al-Walid, who is da'if (weak) because of his tadlis (concealing defects in the chain). The chain of this report is hasan (good).
