Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) came to the door of a man from the Ansar and gave the greeting of peace. The man was at that time with his wife, and he returned the greeting while he was with her. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) greeted a second time, and the man returned the greeting but did not get up. When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was not given permission to enter, he (peace and blessings be upon him) went back. The man got up before he had finished and came after the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), looking for him. Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: We came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) while he was standing, and we gathered around him. The man had taken a bath in a stream beside his house, and when he came he had already bathed. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "He has taken a ritual bath (ghusl), although a bath had not become obligatory on him." The man came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) to apologise and told him about his situation, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "You took a ritual bath, although a bath was not obligatory on you."
Al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Awsat. Al-Bazzar recorded these words from Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him): "When one of you has intercourse with his wife and does not ejaculate, there is no ritual bath." The narrators of al-Bazzar are the narrators of the "Sahih", and the narrators of al-Tabarani have been declared trustworthy, except for al-Tabarani's teacher Muhammad bin Shu'ayb, whom I do not know.
