Sayyiduna al-Nu'man bin Bashir (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I was near the pulpit of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) when a man said: I do not care if I do no deed after Islam except maintaining the Sacred Mosque. Another said: Jihad in the path of Allah is better than what you said. So Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) rebuked them and said: Do not raise your voices near the pulpit of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). It was Friday. After the Friday prayer I will ask about the matter you have differed over. Then Allah Almighty revealed this verse: "Have you made the providing of water to the pilgrims and the maintenance of the Sacred Mosque like (the deeds of) one who believes in Allah and the Last Day and strives in the path of Allah? They are not equal in the sight of Allah. And Allah does not guide the wrongdoing people." [Surah al-Tawbah: 19]

Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) said that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Whoever believes in Allah and the Messenger, establishes prayer, gives zakah and fasts in Ramadan, it is a right upon Allah that He admit him into Paradise, whether he emigrated in the path of Allah or died in the land where he was born." They said: "O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)! Will you not inform the people of this?" He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "In Paradise there are a hundred degrees, and between every two degrees is a distance equal to that between the earth and the heavens. Allah has prepared them for those who strive (in His path). Whenever you ask Allah, ask Him for Jannat al-Firdaws; it is the middle of Paradise and the highest part of Paradise. From it the rivers of Paradise gush forth, and above it is the Throne of the Most Merciful."

He (Abu Dharr (may Allah be pleased with him)) said: I do not think that I would lie against my close friend. I said: Who are the three whom Allah loves? He said: "The first is a man who fights the enemy, as is in the Book of Allah: 'Indeed, Allah loves those who fight in His path in ranks as though they were a solid structure.' [Surah al-Saff: 4]"
I asked: Who is the second? He said: "A man who has a bad neighbour who harms him, and he bears his harm patiently until Allah suffices him against him, through life or death." Who is the third? He said: "A man who is with people on a journey; the people sleep when they halt, but he, out of fear of Allah and longing for Him, performs ablution and stands up for prayer." Who are the three whom Allah hates? He said: "The first is the miser who reminds others of his favours, the second is the arrogant boaster," and this too is in the Book of Allah: "Indeed, Allah does not love any arrogant boaster." [Surah Luqman: 18] He said: Who is the third? He said: "The merchant who swears many oaths, or the seller who sells with many oaths."

Sayyiduna Abu Sa'id al-Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) said that during the Tabuk expedition the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) delivered a sermon to the people while leaning against a palm tree: "Shall I not tell you of the best of people and the worst of people? The best person is one who strives in the path of Allah, on horseback, on camelback or on foot, until death; and the worst person is a bold, wicked man who recites the Book of Allah but takes nothing from it."

Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that one of the Companions passed by a mountain valley in which there was a spring of fresh water, and its fragrance and beauty pleased him. He said: If only I withdrew from the people and settled here! But first I will consult the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). When he mentioned this to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), he (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade him from doing so and said: "Striving in the path of Allah is better than sixty years of worship at home. Do you not love that Allah should forgive your sins and admit you into Paradise? Strive in the path of Allah; whoever fights in the path of Allah for as long as it takes to milk a she-camel, Paradise becomes obligatory for him."

Sayyiduna Abu Umamah (may Allah be pleased with him) said that a man asked the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) for permission (to commit) fornication. The narrator said: Those sitting near the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) tried to seize him. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Leave him." Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Come closer. Would you like fornication to be committed with your sister?" He said: No. He (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: "With your daughter?" The narrator said: He (peace and blessings be upon him) kept saying this to him repeatedly, and each time he answered in the negative. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Then you too should dislike what Allah dislikes, and love for your brother what you love for yourself." The man said: O Messenger of Allah! Supplicate to Allah that He place aversion to women in my heart. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O Allah, make women hateful to him." The narrator said: After a few days he came back and said: O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)! Nothing is more hateful to me than women; now permit me to roam the land (siyahah). He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The roaming (siyahah) of my ummah is in jihad in the path of Allah."
