Mutarrif bin Abdullah bin al-Shikhkhir (may Allah have mercy on him) said: This hadith used to reach me from Sayyiduna Abu Dharr (may Allah be pleased with him), and I longed to meet him. When I met him, I said: O Abu Dharr (may Allah be pleased with him)! This hadith used to reach me from you, and I longed to meet you. He said: How excellent of you! Now that you have met me, tell me. I said: You narrate from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) that he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Allah loves three and hates three." He (Abu Dharr (may Allah be pleased with him)) said: I do not think that I would lie against my close friend. I said: Who are the three whom Allah loves? He said: "The first is a man who fights the enemy, as is in the Book of Allah: 'Indeed, Allah loves those who fight in His path in ranks as though they were a solid structure.' [Surah al-Saff: 4]"
I asked: Who is the second? He said: "A man who has a bad neighbour who harms him, and he bears his harm patiently until Allah suffices him against him, through life or death." Who is the third? He said: "A man who is with people on a journey; the people sleep when they halt, but he, out of fear of Allah and longing for Him, performs ablution and stands up for prayer." Who are the three whom Allah hates? He said: "The first is the miser who reminds others of his favours, the second is the arrogant boaster," and this too is in the Book of Allah: "Indeed, Allah does not love any arrogant boaster." [Surah Luqman: 18] He said: Who is the third? He said: "The merchant who swears many oaths, or the seller who sells with many oaths."
