Abu Salamah bin Abd al-Rahman (may Allah have mercy on him) narrates from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Salam (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: We had gathered and were discussing among ourselves: "Who will ask the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) which deeds are most beloved to Allah?" Then we dispersed, too awed for any of us to go to him; then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) sent for us and gathered us all. We were gesturing to one another, and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) recited to us: "Whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth glorifies Allah, and He is the Almighty, the All-Wise." [Surah al-Saff: 1] Yahya said that Abu Salamah recited it from beginning to end; Abu Salamah said that Abdullah bin Salam (may Allah be pleased with him) recited it from start to finish; al-Awza'i said that Yahya recited it from beginning to end; Abu Ishaq said that al-Awza'i recited it from beginning to end; and Mu'awiyah said that Abu Ishaq recited it from start to finish. Abu Bakr al-Saghani said that Mu'awiyah recited the complete surah to us. Abu al-Abbas said that al-Saghani did not recite the complete surah. Abu al-Abbas and the Qadi recited the opening portion, Abu Abdullah al-Hafiz recited the complete surah, and the Shaykh also recited the complete surah.
