Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: We went with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) to Khaybar, and we did not get gold or silver as spoils; rather, we obtained ordinary goods. Then we came to Wadi al-Qura, and with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was a slave who had been given (to him) by Rifa'ah bin Badr (a man of Banu Dubayb). He was taking the saddle down from the mount of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) when a stray arrow struck him, and because of it he died. The people congratulated him on Paradise. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Not at all! By the One in whose Hand is my soul! He stole a sheet from the spoils of Khaybar before they were distributed, and it is wrapped around him as fire." A man came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) with one or two shoe-straps. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "These one or two shoe-straps are of fire."

He died, and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "He is in Hell." The Companions (may Allah be pleased with them) went and looked, and they found on him a garment which he had stolen from the spoils of war, committing breach of trust.

The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Not at all! Rather, I have seen him in Hell because of a cloak or a sheet he took dishonestly (from the spoils)." Sayyiduna Zayd bin Khalid al-Juhani (may Allah be pleased with him) said: A man died on the day of Khaybar. The Companions (may Allah be pleased with them) mentioned him to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Offer the funeral prayer over your companion." Because of this, the people's faces changed colour. The narrator thought that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Your companion has committed breach of trust in the way of Allah." We searched his belongings and found some beads of the Jews' beads that were not worth even two dirhams.

Then he said: "Let me not find any one of you in such a state that he comes on the Day of Resurrection to the plain of gathering with a camel on his neck making noise, and he says: O Messenger of Allah! Help me. And I say: I cannot do anything for you; I had conveyed the message to you." Then he said: "Let me not find any one of you in such a state that he comes on the Day of Resurrection with a goat bleating on his neck, and he says: O Messenger of Allah! Help me.
