Muhammad bin Abdullah bin al-Harith bin Nawfal heard Sayyiduna Sa'd bin Abi Waqqas and al-Dahhak bin Qays (may Allah be pleased with them both) talking in the year of Sayyiduna Amir Mu'awiyah's (may Allah be pleased with him) Hajj, and they were discussing tamattu'. Al-Dahhak said: Only someone heedless of Allah's command would do this. Sayyiduna Sa'd (may Allah be pleased with him) said: O son of my brother, what an evil thing you have said! Al-Dahhak said: But Sayyiduna Umar bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) used to forbid Hajj al-Tamattu'. Sayyiduna Sa'd (may Allah be pleased with him) said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) did it, and we did it along with him.
This is how it is in this narration: "The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) did it"; but in the established narrations of this hadith from Ghunaym bin Qays from Sayyiduna Sa'd (may Allah be pleased with him), the wording is "We did it", with no mention of the Prophet's (peace and blessings be upon him) doing it. And Allah knows best.

Ghunaym bin Qays (may Allah have mercy on him) said: I asked Sayyiduna Sa'd bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) about Hajj al-Tamattu', and he said: We did it, while this man was at that time a disbeliever in al-'Arsh.
By "this man" Sayyiduna Sa'd bin Abi Waqqas (may Allah be pleased with him) meant Sayyiduna Mu'awiyah bin Abi Sufyan (may Allah be pleased with him), and by al-'Arsh he meant the houses of Makkah.

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: On the occasion of the Farewell Hajj the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) performed tamattu' and offered a sacrifice. He took the sacrificial animal with him from Dhu al-Hulayfah, and first called the talbiyah for Umrah and then for Hajj. The people also performed tamattu' along with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him); some of the people took sacrificial animals with them and some did not. When he (peace and blessings be upon him) reached Makkah, he said to the people: "Whoever has a sacrificial animal with him should not come out of ihram until he has completed his Hajj. Whoever does not have a sacrificial animal should perform tawaf of the House and of Safa and Marwah and come out of ihram, then call the talbiyah for Hajj and offer a sacrifice; and whoever cannot find a sacrificial animal should fast three days during the days of Hajj and seven after returning home." On reaching Makkah, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) performed tawaf: first of all he touched the Corner, then went at a brisk pace for three circuits and walked at an easy pace for four; then, having finished his tawaf, he prayed two rak'ahs at the Station of Ibrahim, then gave the salam, came to Safa and made seven circuits of Safa and Marwah. Then he did not come out of ihram for anything that had become forbidden to him until he had completed his Hajj and offered his sacrifice on the Day of Sacrifice. Then he went back and performed tawaf of the House, and then became free of everything that had been forbidden (because of ihram). And those of the people who had brought sacrificial animals with them did the same.

(a) A hadith to the same effect is also reported from Sayyidah Aishah al-Siddiqah (may Allah be pleased with her).
(b) We have narrated from Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) and Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) a report about his (peace and blessings be upon him) Hajj al-Ifrad which contradicts this hadith. There he (peace and blessings be upon him) did not come out of his ihram until he had finished his Hajj, and this also establishes that he (peace and blessings be upon him) was not performing tamattu'. And Allah knows best.

Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) called the talbiyah for Umrah and his Companions for Hajj. He (peace and blessings be upon him) and those who had brought sacrificial animals did not come out of ihram, and the rest took off their ihram. Sayyiduna Talhah bin Ubaydullah (may Allah be pleased with him) was among those who had brought sacrificial animals, so he did not come out of ihram.

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) that he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "This is an Umrah from which we have benefited, so whoever has no sacrificial animal with him should come out of ihram completely."

Ata' (may Allah have mercy on him) said: Among the people who were with me, I heard Sayyiduna Jabir bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with them both) say: We, the Companions of the Messenger, called the talbiyah for Hajj alone. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) arrived on the morning of the fourth of Dhu al-Hijjah, and after arriving he (peace and blessings be upon him) ordered us to come out of ihram and said: "Come out of ihram and approach your women." Ata' (may Allah have mercy on him) said: Approaching the women was not made obligatory upon them; rather, it was made permissible. Sayyiduna Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) said: It reached him (peace and blessings be upon him) that we were saying: Only five days remain between us and Arafah, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) has told us to come out of ihram and go to our women; are we then to arrive at Arafah with our private parts dripping semen? So the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) stood up among us and said: "You know that I am the most fearful of Allah among you, the most truthful and the most righteous. Had I not brought my sacrificial animal, I too would have come out of ihram as you do. And had I known beforehand about this matter what I have come to know afterwards, I would not have brought the sacrificial animal. So come out of ihram." He said: So we came out of ihram; we heard and we obeyed. Sayyiduna Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) returned from his assignment, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to him: "What talbiyah did you call?" He said: What the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) called. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Then offer a sacrifice and remain in ihram." So Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) offered a sacrifice for him. Sayyiduna Suraqah bin Ju'shum (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Is this benefit for this year only, or forever? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Forever."

Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) said: We reached Makkah with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) on the fourth or fifth of Dhu al-Hijjah. One day the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) came to me in a state of anger. I asked: O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), who has angered you? May Allah send him into Hell. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Do you not know that I gave the people an order and they are hesitating over it?" Al-Hakam said: It is as though they were afraid. I think he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Had I known beforehand about this matter what I have come to know afterwards, I would not have brought the sacrificial animal with me, but would have bought it here, and then come out of ihram just as they have come out of ihram."

Abu Jamrah (may Allah have mercy on him) said: I performed Hajj al-Tamattu', and some people forbade me. So I asked Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both), and he told me to perform tamattu'. Then I saw in a dream as though a man were saying to me: "A Hajj that is mabrur (accepted) and an Umrah that is accepted." I told this to Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both), and he said: "Allahu akbar (Allah is the Greatest)! This is the Sunnah of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)." Abu Jamrah (may Allah have mercy on him) said: Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: "Stay with me, and I will assign you a share of my wealth." Shu'bah (may Allah have mercy on him) said: I asked him: Why did he say that to you? He said: Because of the dream that I had seen.
