It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The imams lead you in prayer. If they lead the prayer correctly, there is reward for you and for them; but if they err, you will receive the reward, and the burden is upon them."

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Bakrah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) entered the Fajr prayer and gestured with his hand: "Stay in your places." Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) came back with drops of water falling from his head, and then he (peace and blessings be upon him) led them in prayer. When he (peace and blessings be upon him) completed the prayer, he said: "I am only a human being, and I was in a state of major ritual impurity (janabah)."

It is narrated from Ata' bin Yasar (may Allah have mercy on him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said the takbir in one of the prayers and gestured with his hand: "Stay." Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) returned in a state where there were traces of water on his (peace and blessings be upon him) body.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) came for the prayer; when the takbir was said, he went back and gestured to the Companions (may Allah be pleased with them): "Remain as you are." Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) came out of his house with drops of water falling from his (peace and blessings be upon him) head. He (peace and blessings be upon him) led the Companions (may Allah be pleased with them) in prayer. When he finished the prayer, he said: "I was in a state of major ritual impurity (janabah) and forgot to take the ritual bath (ghusl)."

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) that when the takbir was said in the morning (Fajr) prayer, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) gestured to the Companions and went away himself. Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) came out of his house with drops of water falling from his (peace and blessings be upon him) head. He (peace and blessings be upon him) led them in prayer and then said: "I am only a human being; I was in a state of major ritual impurity (janabah), but I had forgotten."
Only al-Hasan bin Abd al-Rahman al-Harithi narrated it (in this way). Isma'il Ibn Ulayyah and others narrated it from Ibn Awn, from Muhammad (bin Sirin), from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) as mursal, and that is the preserved (mahfuz) version; all of this is supporting evidence for the hadith of Abu Bakrah.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the iqamah for the prayer had been called and the rows had also been straightened, when the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) came out to us. When he (peace and blessings be upon him) stood in his place of prayer, he (peace and blessings be upon him) remembered that he was in a state of major ritual impurity (janabah). He (peace and blessings be upon him) gestured to us and went into his house, took a ritual bath (ghusl), and came out of his house with drops falling from his (peace and blessings be upon him) head; then he (peace and blessings be upon him) led us in prayer.
Hadith Referenceالسنن الكبرى للبيهقي / كتاب الصلاة / 4068
Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) related that the iqamah for the prayer was called and we were standing; we straightened the rows before he (peace and blessings be upon him) came out. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) came and stood in his place of prayer, and before saying the takbir he (peace and blessings be upon him) remembered (something). Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) went away and said to us: "Stay in your places." We remained standing, waiting for him (peace and blessings be upon him), until he (peace and blessings be upon him) came back; he (peace and blessings be upon him) had taken a ritual bath (ghusl) and water was dripping from his (peace and blessings be upon him) head. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said the takbir and led us in prayer.
The narration of Abu Salamah from Abu Hurayrah is more authentic than the narration of Ibn Thawban from him, except that alongside the narration of Ibn Thawban from him there is the narration of Abu Bakrah, which is musnad (connected), and the narrations of Ata' bin Yasar and Ibn Sirin, which are mursal; and it has also been narrated from Anas bin Malik.

Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) said: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) entered the prayer and said the takbir, and we also said the takbir with him (peace and blessings be upon him). Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) gestured to the people: "Remain as you are." We remained standing, waiting for the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), until he (peace and blessings be upon him) came; he (peace and blessings be upon him) had taken a ritual bath (ghusl) and drops were flowing from his (peace and blessings be upon him) head.
Abd al-Wahhab bin Ata' contradicted him and narrated it from Sa'id, from Qatadah, from Bakr bin Abdullah al-Muzani, from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) as mursal.

It is narrated from Muti' bin al-Aswad (may Allah be pleased with him) that Umar bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) led the morning (Fajr) prayer; then Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) and I rode off towards our land. When Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) sat by a stream to perform ablution (wudu) from it, there was semen on his thigh. He began saying: This semen is on my thigh and I was not even aware of it. He wiped it off. Then (he said): By Allah! Since I have been eating rich, fatty food and have reached such a stage of age, something comes out of me and I am not even aware of it. Then he took a ritual bath (ghusl) and repeated the morning prayer, but he did not order a single person to repeat the prayer.

It is narrated from al-Sharid al-Thaqafi (may Allah be pleased with him) that Umar bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) led the people in prayer while in a state of major ritual impurity (janabah). He (may Allah be pleased with him) repeated the prayer himself, but he did not order those who had prayed behind him to repeat it.

It is narrated from Muhammad bin Amr that Sayyiduna Uthman bin Affan (may Allah be pleased with him) led the people in prayer while in a state of major ritual impurity (janabah). In the morning he saw traces of janabah on his clothes and began saying: I have grown old; by Allah! I find myself in a state of janabah and yet I do not know it. Then he (may Allah be pleased with him) repeated the prayer, and he did not order the others to repeat the prayer.
Abd al-Rahman (may Allah have mercy on him) said: There is agreement on this issue that the one in a state of janabah repeats his prayer, but the others do not repeat it. I do not know of any disagreement about it.

It is narrated from Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) that he led (people) in prayer without ablution (wudu); he repeated the prayer himself, but he did not order the others to repeat it.

Hadith Takhrij«صحيح۔ عبدالرزاق في الأمالي 1/181/143»
It is narrated from Sayyiduna al-Bara' bin Azib (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) led the prayer without ablution (wudu); the people's prayer was complete, but he (peace and blessings be upon him) repeated the prayer.
This is not strong, and what has preceded is sufficient.

It is narrated from Sa'id bin al-Musayyab (may Allah have mercy on him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) led the people in prayer while in a state of major ritual impurity (janabah); he (peace and blessings be upon him) repeated the prayer, and the people also repeated it.
This is mursal, and Abu Jabir al-Bayadi is matruk al-hadith (abandoned in hadith); Malik bin Anas did not approve of him, and Yahya bin Ma'in used to say: Abu Jabir al-Bayadi is a great liar.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) that he led the people in prayer while in a state of major ritual impurity (janabah); he repeated the prayer himself, then he ordered them and they also repeated it.
Only Amr bin Khalid Abu Makhlad al-Wasiti narrates this, and he is matruk (abandoned); the hadith masters accused him of lying.

Asim bin Damrah reports from Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) that he led the people in prayer without ablution (wudu), so he repeated the prayer himself and ordered the others to repeat it as well.
Muhammad bin Ammar said: I asked Waki' about him (Amr bin Khalid), and he said: He was a liar; when we came to know him for lying, he moved to another place.
Hadith Referenceالسنن الكبرى للبيهقي / كتاب الصلاة / 4079
Ibn al-Mubarak (may Allah have mercy on him) said: In this hadith there is no strength for the one who says that when the imam leads the prayer without ablution (wudu), his companions are to repeat the prayer; and the other hadith, that the people do not repeat the prayer, is better established. This is for the one who seeks fairness through the hadith.
Hadith Referenceالسنن الكبرى للبيهقي / كتاب الصلاة / 4081
Ibrahim (may Allah have mercy on him) said concerning a man who leads people in prayer without ablution (wudu): He himself is to repeat the prayer, but the people are not to repeat it.
