It is narrated from Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) that one of the wives of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) performed i'tikaf with him (peace and blessings be upon him) while she had prolonged bleeding (istihadah). She would see redness and yellowness, and sometimes we would place a basin beneath her while she prayed.

It is narrated from Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) performed i'tikaf, and one of his wives also performed i'tikaf with him (peace and blessings be upon him) while she had prolonged bleeding (istihadah). She would see blood, and sometimes she would place a large basin beneath herself because of the blood. (b) The narrator claimed that Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) saw water coloured with safflower and said: This is like what so-and-so used to experience.

It is narrated from Sayyidah Hamnah bint Jahsh (may Allah be pleased with her) that she had prolonged bleeding (istihadah), and her husband used to have intercourse with her.
It is mentioned from Ibn Abbas that he permitted intercourse with her, and this is the view of Ibn al-Musayyib, al-Hasan, Ata, Sa'id bin Jubayr and others.

(a) Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) says that the husband of a woman with prolonged bleeding (istihadah) should not have intercourse with her.
(b) It is narrated from al-Sha'bi (may Allah have mercy on him) that the husband of a woman with prolonged bleeding should not have intercourse with her.
(c) Mu'adh bin Mu'adh narrated it from Shu'bah and separated the words of al-Sha'bi from the words of Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her).
Hadith Referenceالسنن الكبرى للبيهقي / كتاب الحيض / 1563
(a) It is narrated from Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) that a woman with prolonged bleeding (istihadah) should abandon the prayer during the days of her menstruation, then take a ritual bath and perform ablution for every prayer.
(b) Al-Sha'bi (may Allah have mercy on him) says: She does not fast, and her husband does not have intercourse with her.
(c) So the statement about intercourse with her goes back to the words of al-Sha'bi, as Ahmad bin Hanbal said, and we have left it because of the evidence mentioned earlier that intercourse with her is permissible once her menstruation has ended and she has taken a ritual bath.
