It is narrated from Sayyiduna Awf bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Soon my Ummah will split into seventy-some sects. It is narrated from Sayyiduna Tamim al-Dari (may Allah be pleased with him); he said: I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) saying: "This matter (the religion of Islam) will certainly reach wherever the night and day reach, and Allah Almighty will not leave any house of clay or tent of wool except that He will bring this religion into it, with the honour of one who is honoured or the humiliation of one who is humiliated: an honour through which Allah will exalt Islam, and a humiliation through which He will disgrace disbelief." And Sayyiduna Tamim al-Dari (may Allah be pleased with him) used to say: I have come to know (the truth of) this in my own family, for those of them who became Muslim attained good, nobility and honour, and those who remained disbelievers faced humiliation, disgrace and the jizyah.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him); he said: "You are in a time in which the one who speaks the truth is better than the one who stays silent, and the one who stands (for good) is better than the one who sits; and after you there will come a time in which the one who stays silent will be better than the one who speaks, and the one who sits will be better than the one who stands." A man said: O Abu Abd al-Rahman! How can it be that when a person acts upon something today it is guidance, and the same thing after today (in another era) becomes misguidance? He said: "You have already done so. Understand it through the example of two men who passed by people engaged in sins. Both of them objected to it; one of them remained silent and so he remained safe, while the other spoke and said: You are doing such and such (wrong). So the people seized him and took him to their ruler, and then he - or they - kept after him until he accepted their way and began to act as they did."

It is narrated from the Mother of the Believers, Sayyidah Umm Salamah (may Allah be pleased with her), that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Allegiance will be pledged to a man of my Ummah between the Corner (the Black Stone) and the Maqam (of Ibrahim) by people whose number will equal the people of Badr. Then the bands of Iraq and the Abdal of Syria will come to him, and an army from Syria will come against them, until, when they are in the barren plain of the earth (al-Bayda'), they will be swallowed up by the earth. Then a man from Quraysh whose maternal uncles are from the tribe of Kalb will march against him, and Allah will defeat them." The narrator said: It used to be said that the truly deprived on that day will be the one who is deprived of the spoils of the tribe of Kalb.
