It is narrated from Sayyiduna Buraydah (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: I was sitting with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) when Ma'iz bin Malik of the Aslam tribe came and said: O Messenger of Allah, I have committed adultery, and I want you to purify me (by imposing the punishment). The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Go back." He went back and came again three times. Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) sent a man to his people and asked about him. They praised him. He (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: "How is his intellect? Is he not insane?" They said: By Allah, no, and they praised his intellect and his religion. When he came the fourth time, he (peace and blessings be upon him) asked his people again, and they gave the same answer. Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) gave the order, and a pit was dug for him up to his chest, and then he was stoned.
This hadith is sahih on the condition of Imam Muslim, because he used Bashir bin Muhajir as evidence.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Sa'id al-Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) that Ma'iz bin Malik came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: I have committed an indecent act. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) turned him away several times, and asked his people: "Is there anything wrong with him (a mental disorder)?" They said: There is nothing wrong with him, except that he has committed a deed from which he sees no way of deliverance except by having the prescribed punishment (hadd) imposed on him. Abu Sa'id said: He (peace and blessings be upon him) ordered us, so we took him to Baqi' al-Gharqad. We neither dug a pit for him nor tied him up. We began pelting him with potsherds, bones and stones. When he was hurt, he ran, and we ran after him until he stood facing us at al-Harrah. Then we pelted him with large rocks until he fell silent (died). Then in the evening the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) delivered a sermon; he praised and extolled Allah and said: "Amma ba'd (to proceed): What is the matter with people that, when we go out on a military expedition, one of them stays behind among our families making noises like a billy goat (seeking immorality)? Know that whoever such is brought to me, I will give him an exemplary punishment." The narrator said: Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) came down from the pulpit. He (peace and blessings be upon him) neither reviled Ma'iz nor sought forgiveness for him.

Yazid bin Nu'aym narrates from his father that Ma'iz bin Malik came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: O Messenger of Allah, I have committed adultery, so establish upon me (the punishment of) the Book of Allah. He (peace and blessings be upon him) turned away from him, until he came four times. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Take him away and stone him." When the stones struck him, he became distressed and ran off quickly. Abdullah bin Unays came out from his desert dwelling and struck him with the leg bone of a donkey, and he fell down. Then the people pelted him with stones until they killed him. When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was told of his running away, he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Why did you not let him go? Perhaps he would have repented, and Allah would have accepted his repentance."
