The death and burial of Ruqayyah (may Allah be pleased with her)

Hisham bin Urwah narrates from his father, who said: When setting out for the Battle of Badr, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) left Sayyiduna Uthman and Sayyiduna Usamah bin Zayd (may Allah be pleased with them both) behind to nurse Sayyidah Ruqayyah (may Allah be pleased with her), because she was ill. When Zayd bin Harithah (may Allah be pleased with him) came on the she-camel al-Adba' with the glad tidings of victory, Sayyidah Ruqayyah had already passed away. We heard the commotion, and by Allah! we did not believe the glad tidings of victory until we saw the captives (with our own eyes).

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) that when Sayyidah Ruqayyah (may Allah be pleased with her), the daughter of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), passed away, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "No man who has been intimate with his wife tonight should go down into the grave." So Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) did not go down into the grave.
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of Imam Muslim, but the two Shaykhs did not record it.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him), who said: I was present (at the funeral) of the daughter of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). He (peace and blessings be upon him) was sitting at the edge of the grave, and I saw that tears were flowing from his (peace and blessings be upon him) eyes. He (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: "Is there any man among you who has not been intimate with his wife tonight?" Sayyiduna Abu Talhah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: O Messenger of Allah! I am. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Then go down into her grave."
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of Imam Bukhari and Imam Muslim, but the two of them did not record it.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him), who said: I visited Sayyidah Ruqayyah (may Allah be pleased with her), the wife of Sayyiduna Uthman and the daughter of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and she had a comb in her hand. She said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) has just left me; I combed his blessed hair, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) asked me: "How do you find Abu Abdullah (Uthman)?" I said: Very well. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Honour him, for among my Companions he is the one who most resembles me in character."
This hadith has a sahih (authentic) chain, but its text is weak, because Sayyidah Ruqayyah (may Allah be pleased with her) passed away in the year 3 AH at the time of the victory of Badr, whereas Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) accepted Islam after the conquest of Khaybar. And Allah knows best.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him), who said: I visited Sayyidah Ruqayyah (may Allah be pleased with her), the wife of Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) and the daughter of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and she had a comb in her hand. She said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) has just left me; I combed his blessed hair, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) asked me: "How do you find Uthman?" Imam al-Hakim (may Allah have mercy on him) says: I suppose, indeed I am certain, that Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated this hadith from one of the earlier Companions who had visited Sayyidah Ruqayyah (may Allah be pleased with her), but although I searched hard, I could not find that (chain) at this time.

It is narrated from Imam al-Zuhri, who said: It has reached us (and Allah knows best) that on the day of Badr the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) allotted Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) his share. He had stayed behind to nurse his wife Sayyidah Ruqayyah (may Allah be pleased with her), the daughter of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), because she had come down with measles (smallpox). Then, when Sayyiduna Zayd bin Harithah (may Allah be pleased with him) came with the glad tidings of victory, bringing a sacrificial camel with him, Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) was at the grave of Sayyidah Ruqayyah (may Allah be pleased with her) for her burial.
