It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Amr (may Allah be pleased with them both) that he said: "A man came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: 'O Messenger of Allah, teach me to recite (the Qur'an).' The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said to him: 'Recite three of the surahs that begin with (Alif Lam Ra).' The man said: 'My age has advanced, my heart has become hard, and my tongue has become heavy.' He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: 'Then recite three of the surahs that begin with (Ha Mim).' He repeated the same thing again. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: 'Then recite three of the Musabbihat (the surahs beginning with Sabbaha and Yusabbihu).' He again gave the same excuse and said: 'O Messenger of Allah, teach me one comprehensive surah.' So the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) taught him "When the earth is shaken" (Surah al-Zalzalah) until he finished it. The man said: 'By the One who sent you with the truth, I will never add anything to it.' Then the man turned and left, and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: 'This little man has succeeded.' Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) mentioned the deeds that would keep him steadfast."

It is narrated from Abu Asma' al-Rahabi (may Allah have mercy on him) that he said: Once Sayyiduna Abu Bakr al-Siddiq (may Allah be pleased with him) was eating with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) when this verse was revealed: "So whoever does an atom's weight of good will see it, and whoever does an atom's weight of evil will see it" [Surah al-Zalzalah: 7-8]. So Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) withheld (his hand from the food) and said: O Messenger of Allah, will we see every evil that we have done? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The painful and disliked things that befall you (in this world) are the recompense for those very evils, while the good is deferred for its people until the Hereafter."
