It is narrated from Abu Asma' al-Rahabi (may Allah have mercy on him) that he said: Once Sayyiduna Abu Bakr al-Siddiq (may Allah be pleased with him) was eating with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) when this verse was revealed: "So whoever does an atom's weight of good will see it, and whoever does an atom's weight of evil will see it" [Surah al-Zalzalah: 7-8]. So Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) withheld (his hand from the food) and said: O Messenger of Allah, will we see every evil that we have done? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The painful and disliked things that befall you (in this world) are the recompense for those very evils, while the good is deferred for its people until the Hereafter."
Its chain is sahih (authentic), but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it.

Grading: This chain is da'if. Muhammad bin Maslamah al-Wasiti is layyin al-hadith, but he has been corroborated (for al-Suyuti, in "al-Durr al-Manthur" 8/593, attributed it to Ishaq bin Rahawayh and Abd bin Humayd, who are of the same generation as Muhammad bin Maslamah and narrate from Yazid bin Harun, so most likely they too narrated it from Yazid, and thus Muhammad bin Maslamah is freed of responsibility for it). Technical note / Defect ('illah): However, the defect of its being mursal remains, since Abu Asma' al-Rahabi is a Successor who met neither the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) nor Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him). 6/ (2243 - 2246). Technical note / Defect ('illah): Moreover, there is disagreement over it from Ayyub: al-Haytham bin al-Rabi' narrated it from Simak bin 'Atiyyah, from Ayyub (al-Sakhtiyani), from Abu Qilabah (Abdullah bin Zayd al-Jarmi), from Anas. It was recorded via this route by al-Tabari in his "Tafsir" (30/268), al-'Uqayli in "al-Du'afa'" (1905), al-Tabarani in "al-Awsat" (8407), al-Bayhaqi in "Shu'ab al-Iman" (9351) and al-Diya' in "al-Mukhtarah" (6/2243-2246). Technical note / Defect ('illah): About al-Haytham bin al-Rabi', Abu Hatim said: "A shaykh who is not well known." Al-'Uqayli judged him to have erred in this hadith of his, and likewise al-Tabari judged him mistaken in it. Technical note / Defect ('illah): The correct version (as al-Tabari and al-'Uqayli said) is what Isma'il Ibn 'Ulayyah and Abd al-Wahhab al-Thaqafi narrated (in al-Tabari 25/32, 30/268) from Ayyub, who said: I read in the book of Abu Qilabah from Abu Idris that Abu Bakr was eating … and he mentioned it. Abu Idris ('A'idhullah bin Abdullah al-Khawlani) is one of the leading Successors, but he did not hear from Abu Bakr, so his narration is mursal. (4499). Reference / Source: The basis of the hadith has also been narrated from Abu Bakr by another route; see what will come with the author (al-Hakim) at number (4499).
