It is narrated from Sayyiduna Talhah bin Ubaydullah (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: I asked the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) about the meaning of "Subhan Allah", and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "It means declaring Allah Almighty free of every kind of defect and evil."
This hadith has a sahih chain (sahih al-isnad), but the two Shaykhs did not record it.
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to make this supplication frequently: 'Subhanaka Allahumma wa bihamdika, Allahumma-ghfir li' (O Allah, You are glorified with Your praise; O Allah, forgive me). Then when this surah was revealed: "When the help of Allah and the victory come" [Surah al-Nasr: 1], he (peace and blessings be upon him) began to say: "O Allah, You are glorified; O Allah, forgive me; indeed You alone are the Accepter of repentance."
This chain is sahih provided that Abu Ubaydah bin Abdullah bin Mas'ud's hearing from his father is established, and the two Shaykhs did not record it.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) that he heard the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) say: "Whoever says these words: 'Subhan Allah, wal-hamdu lillah, wa la ilaha illallah, wallahu akbar, wa la hawla wa la quwwata illa billah' (Glorified is Allah, all praise is for Allah, there is no god but Allah, Allah is the Greatest, and there is no strength to avoid sin nor power to do good except by the enabling of Allah), then Allah Almighty says: My servant has handed himself over to Me and has become obedient."
