Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: As marfu' (attributed to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)), its chain is weak. Abd al-Rahman bin Abd Allah al-Mas'udi became confused (ikhtilat), and Ibn Hajar mentioned that whoever heard from him in Baghdad heard after his confusion; the one narrating from him here is Qurad Abu Nuh (Abd al-Rahman bin Ghazwan al-Khuza'i), a Baghdadi. Habib bin Abi Thabit is a "mudallis" and narrated with 'an'anah.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): What is preserved, with a sahih chain, is that it is the saying of Sa'id bin Jubayr himself, as will follow.
Reference / Source: Imam al-Bayhaqi narrated it in "al-Shu'ab" (4063), "al-Da'awat" (136) and "al-Adab" (after hadith 715) from Abu Abd Allah al-Hakim, with this chain.
Reference / Source: Ibn Abi al-Dunya in "al-Sabr wa al-Thawab Alayh" (109) and al-Bazzar (5028) narrated it from Muhammad bin Abd Allah, from Qurad Abd al-Rahman bin Ghazwan.
Reference / Source: Al-Khara'iti narrated it in "Fadilat al-Shukr" (33) by way of Hajjaj bin Muhammad al-A'war, from Abd al-Rahman al-Mas'udi. Hajjaj also lived in Baghdad and became confused there at the end of his life.
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: Qays bin al-Rabi' and Shu'bah bin al-Hajjaj corroborated al-Mas'udi, but by two weak routes to them:
Technical note / Defect ('illah): The first is the route of Asim bin Ali al-Wasiti from Qays bin al-Rabi' from Habib bin Abi Thabit (in al-Tabarani's "al-Kabir" (12345), "al-Awsat" (3033), "al-Saghir" (288) and "al-Du'a" (1768), Abu Nu'aym's "al-Hilyah" (5/69) and "Sifat al-Jannah" (82), and al-Bayhaqi's "al-Shu'ab" (4064, 4166) and "al-Adab" (715)). Qays has weakness, and Asim bin Ali, although acceptable, has some objectionable narrations.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): The second is the route of Nasr bin Hammad al-Warraq from Shu'bah from Habib bin Abi Thabit (in al-Tabarani's "al-Saghir", al-Bayhaqi, al-Baghawi's "Sharh al-Sunnah" (1270), Ibn Fakhir's "Mujibat al-Jannah" (370) and Ibn Hajar's "al-Amali al-Mutlaqah" (pp. 23-24)); this corroboration is very weak, since Nasr bin Hammad is very weak and some called him a liar. Al-Hafiz Ibn Hajar said: This hadith is gharib; Nasr bin Hammad is alone in narrating it and he is weak, but Ibn Abi Shaybah and al-Hakim narrated it by way of al-Mas'udi from Habib bin Abi Thabit, and al-Mas'udi is saduq but became confused; so on this basis the hadith is hasan, unless Nasr bin Hammad got it mixed up, it being with him "from al-Mas'udi" and becoming "from Shu'bah".
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: We found a corroboration of Nasr bin Hammad, narrated by al-Malini in "al-Arba'in fi Shuyukh al-Sufiyyah" (40) from Abu Ali Muhammad bin al-Husayn bin Hamzah al-Sufi, from Abu al-Hasan Ali bin Ahmad al-Faqih, from Muhammad bin al-Fudayl al-Zahid, from Sa'id bin Amir, from Shu'bah, from Habib bin Abi Thabit.
Grading: Sa'id bin Amir is thiqah and the one narrating from him, Muhammad bin al-Fudayl, is saduq, but we could not identify those below him.
Important point: This hadith is narrated by two routes, one of them sahih, from Habib bin Abi Thabit from Sa'id bin Jubayr as his own saying: Ibn al-Mubarak narrated it in "al-Zuhd" (206) from Mis'ar bin Kidam, and Ibn Abi Shaybah (14/134) from Abu Bakr bin Abd al-Rahman, from Isa bin al-Mukhtar, from Muhammad bin Abd al-Rahman bin Abi Layla, both (Mis'ar and Ibn Abi Layla) from Habib, from Sa'id bin Jubayr. Although Ibn Abi Layla has poor memory, Mis'ar, who is thiqah and firm, corroborated him; this route is the most correct of this hadith's routes, so perhaps it is the right one. Allah knows best.
