Musnad Ahmad

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Umar, may Allah be pleased with them both, that once he was sitting with the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, when the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, began to repeat this phrase «اللّهُمَّ اغفِرليِ وَتُب عَلَيَّ اِنَّكَ اَنتَ التَوَّابُ الغَفُورٌ» until the one counting counted it on his hand one hundred times.

Imam Sha'bi (may Allah have mercy on him) says that I used to go to and from with Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) for about one and a half to two years, but during this period I did not hear any hadith from him except this one (and look at how many hadith Hasan narrates). Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) said that some companions of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), among whom was Sayyiduna Sa'd (may Allah be pleased with him), began to eat meat at the dining spread. One of the noble wives of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) called out and said, "This is the meat of a lizard." Upon hearing this, the companions (may Allah be pleased with them) stopped. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Eat it, it is lawful and there is no harm in eating it, but it is not something I eat."

Hakeem Haza says that a person asked Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) about the prayer during travel. He replied that during travel, the prayer is two rak'ahs; this is the Sunnah of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him).

Abu al-Khasib says that once I was sitting when Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) came. A man stood up, leaving his place, but Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) did not sit there; instead, he went and sat somewhere else. That man said, "If you had sat there, there would have been no harm in it, would there?" He replied, "I cannot sit in your place or anyone else's place because I have seen that once in the gathering of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), a man came, another person stood up and vacated his place for him, and the newcomer was about to sit in his place, but the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade him from doing so."

Once, a man from Iraq asked Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) about the ruling if a Muhrim kills a fly. Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) replied: "These people of Iraq come to me asking about killing a fly, while the grandson of the Prophet (peace be upon him) was martyred (without anyone asking about it), even though the Prophet (peace be upon him) had said about his two grandsons: 'These two are my sweet basils from this world.'"

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) that in the blessed era of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), the words of the adhan were said twice each, and the words of the iqamah were said once each, except for «قد قامت الصلوة», which was said twice. And when we heard the iqamah, we would perform ablution and stand up for prayer.

The previous hadith is also narrated through this second chain of transmission.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) that once a man asked the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) about the issue: If a man gives his wife three divorces, and another man marries that woman, but divorces her before consummation, will she become lawful for the first husband? He replied: No, not until the second husband tastes her honey.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade (the use of) pitchers, dubba, and muzaffat, and said: "Make nabidh in water skins."

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) came to Makkah Mukarramah, performed the circuits of Tawaf, prayed two rak‘ahs behind Maqam Ibrahim, then exited through the door that leads towards Safa, and performed Sa‘i between Safa and Marwah. Then he said: "This is Sunnah."

Salim (may Allah have mercy on him) says that Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) used to speak about the place of Bida’ and would say that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) assumed Ihram from the mosque itself (and not from the place of Bida’ as you have made famous).

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "If there were to be any bad omen in anything, it would be in three things: the horse, the woman, and the house."

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Fever is from the heat of Hell, so extinguish it with water."

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Jibreel kept advising me regarding the neighbor so continuously that I began to think he would make him an heir."

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said at the occasion of the Farewell Pilgrimage: "Do not become disbelievers after me, striking the necks of one another."

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The keys to everything have been given to me except for five things." Then he recited this verse: "The knowledge of the Hour is with Allah alone. He sends down the rain, and He knows what is in the wombs. No soul knows what it will earn tomorrow, and no soul knows in which land it will die. Surely, Allah is All-Knowing, All-Aware."

Ziyad bin Jubair says that (I was with Sayyiduna Ibn Umar, may Allah be pleased with them both, in the plain of Mina), on the way he passed by a man who had made his she-camel kneel down and wanted to slaughter it. Sayyiduna Ibn Umar, may Allah be pleased with them both, said to him: "Make it stand, tie its legs, and then slaughter it. This is the Sunnah of the Prophet (peace be upon him)."

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "If people knew the harm of traveling alone, then no one would travel alone at night."

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) had the trees of Banu Nadir cut down and set them on fire.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to turn the stone of his ring towards the palm of his hand.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Every nation has its Magians, and the Magians of my nation are the Qadariyyah (those who deny predestination). If they fall ill, do not visit them, and if they die, do not attend their funerals."

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "When any one of you is praying, he should not allow anyone to pass in front of him. If the person insists, then he should fight him, for with him is his companion (Satan)."

Hafs bin Ubaidullah says that when Abdur Rahman bin Zaid bin Khattab passed away, people wanted to take him for burial at night because the crowd had become very large. Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) said, "It would be better if you wait until morning, because I heard the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) say that the sun rises between the horns of Satan."

Saeed bin Jubair says that once I went out with Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them) from his house. We passed by some young men of the Quraysh who had tied up a bird and were practicing their aim on it, and they had told the owner of the bird that whichever arrow misses, it will be yours. At this, Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them) became angry and said, "Who is doing this?" Immediately, all the young men scattered to the right and left. Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them) said, "The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) cursed the person who ties up a living creature and practices his aim on it."

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) that once the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) held a horse race competition.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) once said to Sayyidah Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her): "Hand me the mat from the mosque." She replied, "I am menstruating." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Your menstruation is not in your hand."

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to perform only two rak'ahs of prayer while traveling, but at night he would offer Tahajjud. The narrator says: I asked Salim (may Allah have mercy on him), did he also offer Witr? He replied in the affirmative.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) that once we were participating in a jihad. During the battle, we became frightened and began to flee. At first, we intended to go on a sea journey, then we presented ourselves before the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and we said, "O Messenger of Allah! We are those who have fled and run away." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "No, rather you are those who turn back and attack."

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade making vows and said: “No good is obtained from it, but rather, it is a means by which wealth is extracted from a miserly person.”

Sa’d bin Ubaidah (may Allah have mercy on him) says that once I was sitting with Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them). After a short while, I got up from there and went to sit with Sa’eed bin Musayyib (may Allah have mercy on him). In the meantime, my Kindi companion came; the color of his face had changed and was pale yellow. As soon as he arrived, he said that a man came to Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them) and said, “O Abu Abdur Rahman! If I swear by the Ka’bah, will there be any sin upon me?” He replied, “No, but if you want to swear by the Ka’bah, then swear by the Lord of the Ka’bah, because Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) used to swear by his father. One day the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: ‘Do not swear by your fathers, for whoever swears by other than Allah commits shirk (associating partners with Allah).’”

Nafi' (may Allah have mercy on him) says that when Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) would return from Hajj or Umrah, he would make his camel sit in the valley of Batha at Dhu'l-Hulayfah, and he would say that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) also used to spend the night here until he had performed the Fajr prayer.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) that an angel came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) during his encampment and said, "You are in the blessed Batha."

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) prayed in this small mosque, which is other than the mosque built above Rauha.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Umar, may Allah be pleased with him, that the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, while going towards the right side of the road towards the mound, would camp in a spacious and soft land, away from the beak of the mountain, under a large courtyard, which is at a distance of two miles from another beak. Its lower part has now fallen off and it stands on its roots.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) prayed in a mosque on a large mountain beyond “Arj.” This mosque is located at a distance of five miles while going towards Arj, and near this mosque there are also two or three graves, and many stones are placed on these graves. This place comes on the right side of the road. Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) used to set out from “Arj” after the sun had passed its zenith at noon, and upon reaching this mosque, he would perform the Zuhr prayer.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) also stopped at a spacious place near a water channel behind Harshi, which comes on the left side of the road. That channel is connected to Harshi. Some say it is adjacent to Kura’ Harsha. There is a distance of an arrow’s throw between it and the road.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) that when the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) would come to Makkah Mukarramah, he would camp at "Dhi Tuwa", spend the night there, and also perform the Fajr prayer there. The place where the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to pray was on a large mound, not in the mosque that has now been built there, but rather below it, on a rough and large mound.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) faced both parts of that long mountain (which is in front of the Ka'bah), kept the mosque built there—which is on one side of the mound—on his right hand, and the place where the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) prayed was just below it on the black mound. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) stood leaving about ten yards or so from the mound, and he would pray facing those two parts which were between the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and the Ka'bah in that long mountain.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) that in the blessed era of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), the words of the adhan were said twice each, and the words of the iqamah were said once each, except that the mu’adhdhin «قد قامت الصلوة» would say twice.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to pray two rak'ahs in his house after Maghrib.
