Nafi’ (may Allah have mercy on him) says that Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) used to lease out his land during the time of the three caliphs and in the early period of the caliphate of Sayyiduna Amir Muawiyah (may Allah be pleased with him). If I wished, I could also mention the blessed era of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). But in the later period of Sayyiduna Amir Muawiyah’s (may Allah be pleased with him) rule, he came to know that Sayyiduna Rafi’ bin Khadij (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade leasing land. So he went to him, and I was with him. He asked Sayyiduna Rafi’ (may Allah be pleased with him) about this matter, and he replied, “Yes! The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade leasing land.” Upon hearing this, Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) abandoned this practice, and later, when anyone asked him about it, he would say, “Rafi’ bin Khadij is of the opinion that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade leasing land.”

Nafi’ (may Allah have mercy on him) says that once Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) gave his wife a divorce while she was in her menstrual period. Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) asked the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) about this issue, so the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) ordered that he should take her back and wait until she has her next menstrual period and then becomes pure, and then before approaching his wife, he may divorce her. This is the method according to which Allah has permitted men to divorce their wives. It was the practice of Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) that when he was asked about a person who divorces his wife during her menstrual period, he would say: Why did you not give her one or two divorces? For the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) ordered that he should take his wife back and wait for the next menstrual period and then for her to become pure, and then before approaching her, he may divorce her. But you have given your wife three divorces; you have disobeyed the command of Allah regarding divorcing your wife, and your wife has become separated from you and you from her.

Once, his son Abdullah came to him and said, “I fear that there will be fighting and killing among the people this year. Would it not be better if you stayed back this year and did not go for Hajj?” Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) replied, “The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) also set out for Hajj, and the disbelievers of Quraysh came between him and the Sacred Sanctuary. So, if any obstacle comes before me as well, I will do what the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) did.” Then he recited this verse: “Indeed, in the Messenger of Allah you have an excellent example.” And he said, “I make you a witness that I have made the intention for Umrah.” After that, he set out, and when he reached the place of Bayda’, he said, “The matter of Hajj and Umrah is the same. I make you a witness that I have now made the intention for Hajj along with my Umrah.” Thus, he reached Makkah and performed a single Tawaf for both.
