Al-Harith bin Amr (may Allah have mercy on him), the nephew of Sayyiduna al-Mughirah bin Shu'bah (may Allah be pleased with him), narrates from Sayyiduna Mu'adh bin Jabal (may Allah be pleased with him) that when the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) sent him to Yemen, he said to him: "If a case comes before you, how will you judge?" He said: "I will judge according to the Book of Allah." He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "And if it is not in the Book of Allah?" He said: "Then according to the Sunnah of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)." He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "And if it is not in the Sunnah of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) either?" He said: "I will exert my own judgement (ijtihad) and spare no effort." The narrator said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) struck him on his chest and said: "All praise is for Allah, Who has guided the envoy of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) to what pleases the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)."

It is narrated from Yahya bin al-Hakam (may Allah have mercy on him) that Sayyiduna Mu'adh bin Jabal (may Allah be pleased with him) said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) sent me to the people of Yemen as a collector of zakah, and ordered me to take from cattle, for every thirty, one calf (tabi') - and the tabi' is one that is a year old - or a female calf, and for every forty, one musinnah (a two-year-old). He said: They asked me to take (zakah also) on what is between forty and fifty, between sixty and seventy, and between eighty and ninety, but I refused them and said to them: "Not until I ask the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) about that." So I came and informed the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), "and he (peace and blessings be upon him) ordered me to take for every thirty one calf, for forty one musinnah, for sixty two calves, for seventy one musinnah and one calf, for eighty two musinnahs, for ninety three calves, for one hundred one musinnah and two calves, for one hundred and ten two musinnahs and one calf, and for one hundred and twenty three musinnahs or four calves." And the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) ordered me not to take anything from the numbers in between, until (the number) reaches a musinnah or a jadha'ah; and he also said that there is no obligation (no zakah due) on the awqas.

Abdullah bin Rafi' (may Allah have mercy on him) said: When Sayyiduna Abu Ubaydah bin al-Jarrah (may Allah be pleased with him) was struck by the plague of Amwas, he appointed Sayyiduna Mu'adh bin Jabal (may Allah be pleased with him) as his successor. The illness became severe, and the people said: "O Mu'adh, pray to Allah to remove this punishment from us." He said: "It is not a punishment; rather, it is the supplication of your Prophet, the (manner of) death of the righteous before you, and a martyrdom which Allah grants specially to whomever He wills among you."

Al-Hasan (al-Basri) (may Allah have mercy on him) narrates from Sayyiduna Mu'adh bin Jabal (may Allah be pleased with him); he said: When death came to him, he wept. The people asked: "What makes you weep?" He said: "By Allah, I do not weep out of fear of death, nor over any worldly thing that I will leave behind me; but I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say: 'They are only two handfuls: one handful is in the Fire and one handful is in Paradise,' and I do not know in which of the two handfuls I will be."

Abu Tariq al-Sa'di said: I was present with al-Hasan (may Allah have mercy on him) at the time of his death while he was making his will. He said to the scribe: "Write: In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. This is what al-Hasan has testified: he testified that there is no true god except Allah and that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah, truthfully from his heart. Whoever testifies to it truthfully at the time of his death will enter Paradise." I heard this, that Sayyiduna Mu'adh bin Jabal (may Allah be pleased with him) also made this same bequest at the time of his death, and he used to narrate it from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him).

Sayyiduna Mu'adh bin Jabal (may Allah be pleased with him) said to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him): "By the One Who sent you with the truth, something occurs in my heart such that I would rather become a piece of charcoal (burnt to ashes) than speak of it." The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "All praise is for Allah! Indeed, the devil has despaired of being worshipped in this land of mine, but he is content with those deeds of yours which (you) consider insignificant."

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Mu'adh bin Jabal (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Six things are among the signs of the Hour: my death; the conquest of Bayt al-Maqdis; a death that will spread among the people as a plague spreads among sheep; that a man will be given a thousand dinars and consider it insufficient; a trial (fitnah) the fear of which will enter the heart of every Muslim; and that the Romans will march against us and advance under eighty banners."

I said: "Certainly, O Messenger of Allah." He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "La hawla wa la quwwata illa billah" (that is, there is no power to avoid evil and no strength to do good except through Allah).

I said: "Here I am at your service, O Messenger of Allah." He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Do you know what the right of Allah upon His servants is?" I said: "Allah and His Messenger know best." He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The right of Allah upon the servants is that they worship Him and do not associate anything with Him." Then he said: "Do you know what the right of the servants upon Allah is when they have done that?" I said: "Allah and His Messenger know best." He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Their right upon Him, when they have done that, is that He forgives them and admits them into Paradise."

Abu Salamah (may Allah have mercy on him) said that Sayyiduna Mu'adh bin Jabal (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I said: "O Messenger of Allah, advise me." He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Worship Allah as though you see Him, count yourself among the dead, remember Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, beside every stone and every tree, and when you commit an evil deed, do a good deed right alongside it: the hidden (sin expiated) by a hidden (good deed), and the open (sin expiated) by an open (good deed)." Then he said: "Shall I not tell you of what gives people more control than all of that?" I said: "Certainly, O Messenger of Allah." So he (peace and blessings be upon him) took hold of the tip of his tongue. I said: "O Messenger of Allah!" - as though he considered it a trivial matter - and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Is it not this (tongue) alone that throws people on their noses into Hell?" And he (peace and blessings be upon him) again took hold of the tip of his tongue.
