حَدَّثَنَا عَلِيُّ بْنُ عَبْدِ الْعَزِيزِ، ثنا مُسْلِمُ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ، ثنا الْبَرَاءُ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللهِ الْغَنَوِيُّ، قَالَ: سَمِعْتُ الْحَسَنَ يُحَدِّثُ، عَنْ مُعَاذِ بْنِ جَبَلٍ قَالَ: لَمَّا أَنْ حَضَرَهُ الْمَوْتُ بَكَى، فَقَالُوا: مَا يُبْكِيكَ؟ فَقَالَ: وَاللهِ مَا أَبْكِي جَزَعًا مِنَ الْمَوْتِ، وَلَا عَلَى دُنْيَا أُخَلِّفُهَا بَعْدِي، وَلَكِنِّي سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَقُولُ: «إِنَّمَا هُمَا قَبْضَتَانِ، فَقَبْضَةٌ فِي النَّارِ، وَقَبْضَةٌ فِي الْجَنَّةِ فَلَا أَدْرِي مِنْ أَيِّ الْقَبْضَتَيْنِ أَكُونُ؟»
Al-Hasan (al-Basri) (may Allah have mercy on him) narrates from Sayyiduna Mu'adh bin Jabal (may Allah be pleased with him); he said: When death came to him, he wept. The people asked: "What makes you weep?" He said: "By Allah, I do not weep out of fear of death, nor over any worldly thing that I will leave behind me; but I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say: 'They are only two handfuls: one handful is in the Fire and one handful is in Paradise,' and I do not know in which of the two handfuls I will be."
