Sayyiduna Mu'adh bin Jabal (may Allah be pleased with him) said: A man came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: O Messenger of Allah! What do you say about a man who met a woman he did not know, and did everything with her that a man does with a woman, except that he did not have intercourse with her? So Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, revealed this verse: "And establish the prayer at the two ends of the day and in some hours of the night. Indeed, good deeds wipe out evil deeds. That is a reminder for those who take heed" [Hud: 114]. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to him: "Perform ablution, then pray." Mu'adh (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I said: O Messenger of Allah! Is this specifically for him alone, or for the believers in general? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said three times: "Rather, it is for the believers in general."

When he had completed the prayer, we said: O Messenger of Allah! You prayed a prayer in which you lengthened its standing, its bowing and its prostration? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "It was a prayer of longing and fear (raghab and rahab). I asked my Lord for three things; He granted me two and withheld one from me. I asked Him not to give power over my nation to an enemy from other than themselves who would uproot them, and He granted me that. I asked Him not to destroy them by famine, and He granted me that too. And I asked Him not to let their violence be among themselves, and He withheld that from me."

Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) came out and led us in prayer, and he kept his prayer short. Then, having finished (the prayer), he turned his face towards us and said: "Stay in your places; I will tell you what delayed me from you today in this prayer. I prayed during this night of mine as much as Allah willed, then my eyes grew heavy and I fell asleep, and I saw my Lord, the Mighty and Majestic, in the most beautiful and most handsome form. He said: O Muhammad! I said: Here I am, O my Lord! He said: Over what does the Highest Assembly (the exalted company of angels) dispute? I said: I do not know, O my Lord. Then He said: O Muhammad! I said: Here I am, O my Lord! He said: Over what does the Highest Assembly dispute? I said: I do not know. Then He placed His palm between my shoulders, and I felt the coolness of His fingertips in the middle of my chest, and I came to know everything and I saw it. Then He said: O Muhammad! I said: Here I am, O my Lord! He said: Over what does the Highest Assembly dispute? I said: Over the expiations. He said: And what are they? I said: Walking on foot to the Friday prayers, and performing ablution (wudu) thoroughly in the cold; and the ranks. He said: And what are they? I said: Feeding people, speaking gently, and praying at night while people are asleep. He said: Ask. I said: O Allah, I ask You for good deeds, the abandoning of evil deeds, and love of the poor, and that You forgive me and have mercy on me; and when You intend a trial among Your creation, take me to Yourself without my being afflicted by the trial; and I ask You for Your love, the love of whoever loves You, and the love of deeds that bring me closer to Your love."
